RE: ULM Fans on game day
ULM could possibly have a natural disaster hit their Athletic Complex, coupled with Covid, and get a boatload of FEMA/Insurance money...I’ve seen stranger things happen to broke universities in north Louisiana.

RE: ULM Fans on game day
"The thing is, dropping to FCS doesn’t save a ton of money, and the revenue would be much less. Where you could save is the need for 16 sports, but you’re still looking at a big drop in revenue from conference TV contracts."

I was going to stay out of this debate because of the game day yesterday. I really think this is a better offseason discussion is at least when football season is over.. but:

The problem is travel money and (as you state) the requirement for 16 sports. They Warhawks have been competitive in football in the past, but their fans have never really fully embraced the SBC as they did when they were competitive for the national championships in FCS (or D1A back then.) This year has to be devastating for them financially speaking. It is bad for all of us, but they were already teetering on the brink of financial ruin before this started, with the lowest budget in FBS. There are several FCS teams that have higher athletic budgets. To be honest, they are not in a position to compete at this level. In order to attract fans to raise their budget, they need to be competitive. In order to be competitive, they need to have more money, so it is a endless cycle. Their fans need to see them win at something. They would probably win in the Southland.

So Jay is right, only ULM will decide their own fate in FBS, but at some point they have to decide whether they want to S---- or get off the pot. At some point if more attractive teams become available for conference membership, the league may put some pressure on them to make more of a commitment.

Let me say one thing more. I do not wish ULM ill will (except when they play the Cajuns.) I have been a fan long enough to remember that the football conference would not exist had it not been for ULM jumping in at the last minute to replace the short sighted dog killers at the last minute. For that I am still grateful, but at some point I hope they decide what is best for them; either increasing their budget (somehow?) or to think about rejoining peer schools in the Southland.

Show some class dude.

They drag down the quality of the conference in both the important sports and show virtually no signs of upward trajectory. It’s nothing against the fans nor the institution. But these are competitive sports, not participation awards.

For the same reason I wouldn’t want Akron or FIU or McNeese State in the conference, I don’t want ULM.

You made some good points, I think he was talking to the other guy that called us a stain. But there are some signs of upward trajectory. As of now we have the second best 2021 recruiting class in the conference (per 247sports), and our new president that started in September has at least paid lip service to taking athletics seriously.

For what it’s worth, those recruiting numbers are a bit deceiving. And this goes for App State too.

Both App and ULMs rankings are wildly inflated by the amount of recruits as opposed to the quality. If you look at the average rating of your players- 82.07 - puts you 6th in the conference. So you’re recruiting below average quality for the conference, but just a lot of them, which pushed up your overall score.

https://247sports.com/Season/2021-Footba...erence=SBC

Same goes for App at “59”, wedged between UCLA and Stanford. Look at the average player score of each:

Stanford - 86.16
App - 83.16
UCLA - 87.02

From a quality standpoint, Apps recruiting is much more in line with teams ranked in the 70’s & 80’s. We, like ULM, are ranked higher because we have a lot of recruits. I’m not entirely sure their methodology is truly reflective of the quality of the recruiting class, especially when every school has a different amount of needs based on scholarships available. Is App really recruiting better than UCLA? Unlikely.

Im not trying to be a dickhead, this is just the reality. I want the conference to be the best in G5 and us all to elevate each other. Can ULM do their part while being among the worst Football and Basketball programs in Division 1, and an athletic department budget on par with Northern Kentucky, Southern Utah and Texas-Rio Grande Valley? I have a very difficult time seeing light at the end of that tunnel.

I agree calling them a stain is pretty harsh.

I take it no one posting in this thread had Mulkeymania in the '80s.

(And ULM fans, I'm sure it's easy to take this comparison as an insult, but I don't mean it that way. I'm just reminded of a time in my life when the love for the scrappy underdog was very real.)

Nobody in south Louisiana should complain about anyone getting a boatload of aid after a natural disaster. I've lived in Baton Rouge since 1994, and I've witnessed first hand how often New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, and Lake Charles do their share of cashing in on disaster funds. That being said, man, I visited the Tech campus over the holidays. It's quite impressive. IMO, ULM will not drop to FCS. It's FBS or drop football entirely. I don't think there is a middle ground.

Thanks for saying that and I was there yesterday. Plain fact is y’all are very talented and deep. We all know it so yes it does no good to rub it in. We will improve in all other sports especially basketball so don’t go dogging yet,it will come back to bite you in the ass. We have a new President that knows we can’t continue doing what we’ve been doing. It’s going to take some time but it will get done. Count on it. I do believe also Louisiana is goi g to beat App soundly. That was one excellent team I saw in person yesterday

You know, since laturd got all those big bucks from the feds, shouldn’t that mean that all taxpayers are allowed to attend games in those stadiums for free? I mean it’s very clear that there is no way in hell they could’ve afforded all that without our money, so we should be able to at least reap some benefits from it. Why shouldn’t we since we are paying for it all when their own fan base doesn’t support it enough to do it.

Hurricane Laura hit Monroe pretty hard but not that bad, that was probably our chance.

Hopefully the new president can make a difference and you guys see some new money come into the program.

As pointed out, they've recruited pretty well (but signing day isn't here yet) and they do have a new president. That's big because Nick Bruno was an albatross when it came to athletics.

But time is running out. An already strapped financial situation is even worse because of COVID. And, even with a new president, can ULM start putting enough money in the coffers to stay afloat? And, can they do it quickly enough?

And, can they talk Viator into staying? He's a very good football coach...IMO, the best ULM has had since moving up to 1-A/FBS.

I think the time is critical for the Warhawks.

The bold above is more or less where I am with ULM. They can be better with a new president. the Cajuns know 1st hand how important that can be to Athletics. But timing is the current major issue ULM faces. The effects of COVID and losing is not a combination for building a successful program. I just looked at ULM 2021 schedule. it could be another 0 or 1 win season. Time will tell, but money will be needed until the winning can pick up.

I don't think they'll need to convince him, he just got an extension through 2022 fairly recently. We may need to make a change, not that we can afford it. He's completely lost the team, reportedly a player's mom even found her way to the locker room door and started yelling at him.

There's really no reason for that. How could the university allow that?

He has the worst winning % than any coach in the last 20 years at ULM...he can stay as long as he likes

U really on a thread about ULM woes gonna brag about your welfare Lexus. Your trailer park neighbor to the east is struggling and has to decide whether to use food stamps to buy food or buy shoes for little Isaiah.

Hey spend your Gubment money on whatever you feel just remember that the rest of the real Universities worked for what they got so we're not impressed. Just happy for your girls softball team not having to change in a converted porta potty trailer. Is there enough uncle Sam money to replace the outhouse y'all use as a ticket booth?

When you say “all YOU’LL lack is an update to football stadium” I do believe you forgot to mention all of the fans that are needed to fill up all that fancy new parking lot FEMA paid for. Tax payer money at work the good ol’ Louisiana way!
