Semantics: Virginia Basketball - Defending Champions?
Is it proper to call Virginia the defending national champions for basketball this season?

Absent an undisputed championship competition, I’m gonna say that college sports revert to the polls and rankings. Looks like Kansas was #1 in the AP and coaches polls and in RPI rankings. Gonzaga was #1 in NET rankings. Anybody else with a claim to last year’s disputed championship?

RE: Semantics: Virginia Basketball - Defending Champions?
Absolutely. Virginia will be a 2 year defending national champion.

Good thing also because last year’s team was absolutely putrid on offense. Cavaliers would not have been able to defend the title in the tournament last year. This year’s team is much better.

As an aside, I really don’t understand the basketball COVID mitigation strategy. Football actions made sense (except for the BIG & PAC decisions to not play when the spread was being managed...and starting to play as the risk increased). I’m surprised that the power conference didn’t start the season with conference-only games in bubbles.

I sort of agree. In women’s hoops I consider South Carolina the pseudo national champs by virtue of being unanimous number one and having head to head wins over basically everyone except Oregon

RE: Semantics: Virginia Basketball - Defending Champions?
Good grief, there WAS NO national champ in 2019-2020, as the mechanism for determining that, the NCAA Tournament, was called off.

Just like there was no MLB champion in 1994, the year the playoffs and WS were called off.

So yes, Virginia is the defending champ, as they are the last crowned national champion.

Here's how I view it in a general sense.

Virginia was the national champion until the first game was played last season (2019-20). At that point, UVa became the defending national champion and will remain such until the next national champ is crowned.

Either Virginia is the defending champion because they won the last one, or there is no such thing because you're not defending the title like a boxer or MMA fighter, you're trying to win another title.

My Ohio bias tells me that Dayton won This year’s mythical March Madness.

To be the man, you got to beat the man. Ain’t nobody beat UVa in the tournament, until that happens they are the champs.

Correct. The USF Bill Russell graduated from.

RE: Semantics: Virginia Basketball - Defending Champions?
Can't we just pull a school from a hat and call them the defending champs? With like 350 schools I'm sure we would get a interesting pick. In all seryi would say there's no defending champ this year.

RE: Semantics: Virginia Basketball - Defending Champions?
As far as I am concerned, no college basketball team in the modern era can be said to a "defending" champion. With the roster instability we have today, every year virtually every school has a brand new team. The old team, the one that won the tournament, has already moved on.
