A Conversation With Green Bay Packer Quarterback Brett Favre
More than 10 years ago, a scrappy football player from the tiny town of Kiln, Miss., sought to make a name for himself in the world of college football.
On Sept. 19, 1987, the 17-year-old signal caller made his collegiate debut for the Golden Eagles against longtime rival Tulane. The game, a 31-24 come-from-behind win by Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, would be the first of many standout performances for the Mississippi native and it was just the beginning of what would become a legendary Southern Miss career.
"My first game against Tulane was special," Favre said. "It was like the Super Bowl for me."
Playing for Southern Miss was a very important step in fulfilling a childhood dream for Favre. A relative unknown after high school, Favre wanted to not only prove that he had what it took to succeed in the college game, but he also wanted to show he could hang with those in the NFL.
So when the chance to play college football for the Golden Eagles came about, Favre gladly took the opportunity, and it is one that he will be forever grateful for.
"Southern Miss gave me the opportunity to do something most people would only dream of doing," Favre said. "It gave me the chance to play the game I love."
