If people want us to play The Mormons then do it in the Peach Bowl.

Sadly this is what I’m expecting. It shields the P5 from playing both BYU and UC and potentially showing that the committee may have gotten it wrong by one, or both of us beating a top P5 team.

What does UC have to lose by playing BYU? No other G5 team is going to pass them with 1 loss to a Top 10 team. When the CFP Rankings come out on Tuesday you’ll see that teams like Marshall & Coastal Carolina are barely in the Top 25. As long as UC takes care of business in the AAC they’re getting the NY6 bid. Scheduling BYU is like playing with house money. And both programs owe it to the rest of the non P5 schools to try to break the CFP glass ceiling when there’s a legitimate path available to do so.

There's no guarantee that a loss to BYU wouldn't drop us below an undefeated Marshall or Coastal Carolina. The voters would love to put a cinderella in the NY6 over a 1 loss AAC champ. The risk/reward is too great. Do you really think that beating an overrated BYU team would put us in the CFP. I think we'll either see 2 teams from the SEC or the ACC get in. And if that doesn't pan out, they'll allow a 2 loss Oklahome in before UC.

We do not owe other G5 programs anything.

Risk v Reward. If we win it will be UC beats another over-rated G5. If we lose an over-rated Marshall or CCU, will leap frog us. Both of which will get crushed in the Peach Bowl, but pre game the media can play the We Are Marshall 50 years stuff or the CCU what is a Chanticlairs stuff. Then after they get crushed the P5 can say "They really did not belong vs a P5"

The bye gives us a needed rest before Tulsa I.

I agree with Doss. All risk no reward. BYU needs help to get the at large bid. A win over UC would help them greatly. UC has a lock on the G5 bid so long as they win the games already on the schedule.

Spend the extra week prepping for Tulsa again. You absolutely have to earn the G5 bid this year or it validates every knock on coaching here or signing to play here over P5 schools.

I... almost... see your point.

However, we are holding out hope that this is the year they let a G5 into the CFP.

Sure, if we win a game against BYU we are far and away the undisputed non-P5 kingpin.

If we lose, it's bye bye to it all. Yeah, we'll still get the NY6 game but it would be a consolation prize.

Have you actually looked at the ranking history of G5’s that earn the NY6 bid? Here is some notable data on past NY6/BCS auto bid winners:

2016 WMU (13-0 #15): Temple (10-3 #24), SDSU (11-3 NR)
2014 Boise (10-2 #19): Marshall (12-1 NR), Memphis/UCF/UC (9-3 NR)
2012 NIU (13-0 #15): Boise (11-2 #19)

AAC/MWC Teams that finished ranked “low”:
2019 Memphis #17: L to okay Temple team
2019 Boise #19: L to mediocre BYU team
2015 Houston #18: L to mediocre UConn team
2014 Boise (11-2 #20): 2 L’s to good teams Ole Miss & AF
2015 Navy (10-2 #21): 2 L’s to good teams ND & Houston
2018 Fresno (11-2 #21): 1 L to good Boise, 1 L at Minn

The Apparent Outlier:
2019 App State (12-1 #20): 2 road W’s vs P5s, L to mediocre Ga Southern
>So ASU earned the AAC/MWC treatment with those wins & then got the same treatment with a bad loss

Basically, it takes an L to a bad team or 2 L’s to good teams by the AAC/MWC Champs to even get the other G5 Champs in the discussion for the NY6 bid. A UC L to a Top 10 BYU wouldn’t put UC’s bid in jeopardy at all as long as they take care of business in the AAC.

If CC goes undefeated and UC has a loss they will likely jump us. Rhetorically, those other years were there any undefeated G5 teams that didn’t get the bid?

As a fan i'd love to pound BYU, and i believe we would win by multiple scores.

Strategically though i agree with those saying its everything to lose and nothing to gain. I flatout dont believe they honestly consider us or byu for the playoff. Too much media money involved. Our media is corrupt and protects its big investments.

I've long wondered when the G5 schools will finally get organized and start pushing back on this fixed system. Coaches poll being the easiest place. Organize the smaller conferences to obnoxiously overrate their schools and underrate the "p5". Why not? they do it to us! Pressure AP pollsters in G5 markets to do the same.

If we get shut out of playoffs and go undefeated do we claim a national title like UCF did? I say yes!

We will gladly play BYU.

At Nippert (four road games in four week? No thanks.)

With College Gameday in attendance and as the primetime game of the week.

With a promise the winner gets invited to the playoffs.

if it was respected as a play-in then we ALL would agree. unfortunately i believe it would only serve as a NY6 elimination game.

It should be played at Paul Brown Stadium or in Vegas as a made for TV game with a separate payout from the conference TV money. If these two schools are potentially going to put a NY6 bid at risk, they should at least get a nice payday to compensate them. During a year of economic shortfalls this could be a windfall for both schools. The PAC-12 averages $5M per game for their TV deal, so a UC-BYU made for TV matchup should be worth at least $6-8M. $3-4M each sound good to play this game?

I agree with this sentiment. It would even be bad for us if we beat BYU but it was close. We would be pushed back because we barely beat the #14, non-P5 team by a touchdown. Beating someone like Oklahoma or even sadly a team like Oregon (who is ranked behind BYU) would carry more weight because of perceptions and historic bias the committee has shown in these situations.
