Great observation. Elite programs have sustainability beyond a single coach. I'll go out on a limb and say Gonzaga, post Mark Few, will slide back to irrelevancy. I'll also suggest UCONN has won their last national championship. It's no knock on either program and what's been achieved. But historically great programs prosper under different coaches with conference championships, rankings, tournament appearances and All Americans.

Anyone else recall Huggins, with his deadpan, dry wit, suggesting UC had won conference championships in MORE conferences than any team in college basketball? He shared it as a humorous remark but it's probably true.

Other legends include Ron Bonham, Tom Thacker, Danny Fortson, Kenyon Martin and Steve Logan -- all consensus All-Americans. Gary Clark and Jarron Cumberland have been big-time guys in recent seasons, but I can't close out this capsule without bringing up Nick Van Exel and Yancy Gates, a couple of guys who define Bearcat basketball as well as anyone.

Wasn't Sean Kilpatrick a consensus All-American?

Gary Clark .... the ultimate plus player.

Gary Clark would have been a consensus All-American if voters actually paid attention and looked at advance stats and not just PPG

There’s a lot of programs like that. Ones that have been tremendously successful under just one coach and a bunch of mediocrity outside of it.

Will be interesting to see what happens to programs like Duke, Syracuse and Gonzaga, once their current coaches are gone.
