Troy QB legend Sim Byrd passes away
I'm sure most of you are unfamiliar with Sim Byrd, but he's arguably the most well-known Troy football player among Troy fans.
He passed away yesterday at the age of 75.
He was the QB for Troy in 1968 when we won the NAIA national title.
In 1968, he led all of college football (NAIA and NCAA) in passing yards and TD passes. He threw for 3,569 yards and 41 TD's that season. Troy's offensive philosophy was way ahead of its time... that sort of a pass attack was unheard of in the 60's, since most teams were running a smash-mouth rush attack back then.
To put that into perspective, the NCAA Division I passing leader that year (Greg Cook, Cincinnati) had 3,272 passing yards and 25 TD passes.
He still holds quite a few Troy passing records, which is pretty crazy considering we've been running a pass-oriented spread offense since 2006.
