UTA wasn’t going to add football and it wasn’t a reason why they left the WAC. They left for other, obvious reasons.

The WAC took UTA with the hope they would add football.

UTA left the WAC for the Sunbelt for obvious reasons.

I see no benefit for UTA leaving the Sunbelt for the Southland especially if they are even thinking about football anytime in the future as a possibility. Being in the Sunbelt guarantees FBS football will always be an option

That's a little far fetched David...

Chattanooga would be the only one to consider the move, and that's just because of JSU, KSU and UNA.

The rest of them shouldn't consider it.

UTC might like to leverage itself to get something it wants, like OVC membership to get ETSU with them, but I don’t think ASun offers them anything. I doubt any of the SoCon schools bite on this one.

I think the OVC is a step down from the SoCon, no?

I would say no, its not a step down. I would say the same in reverse. Neither are premiere. MVC and CAA are the only step ups in FCS.

Academically and for football, SoCon is a bump up. Hoops usually goes to OVC, although SoCon has seen an uptick there. But, yeah, even with football, SoCon’s best FCS days are presently behind them.

SoCon is way better in hoops than OVC. OVC is often a bottom 5 league. It just doesn’t appear that way because of 2 elite teams. JSU/APSU/EKU and maybe Morehead are usually fine. But the bottom half (EIU/SIUE/SEMO/TSU/TT/UTM) of the OVC is equivalent to the SWAC.

RE: Honest to God realignment news!
The issue you might see public schools to break away from the private schools in SoCon is that they have different agendas. Give the ASun the public schools or the private schools and vice versus. SoCon then would have schools in Florida now for recruitment. Plus, if West Texas A&M's AD is correct? The large D2 schools are not happy about D2 leadership? You could get large D2 publics in the region to move up. We already saw reports that some Georgia schools like Augusta and Columbus State exploring to join D1.

Honestly, after losing App State and Georgia Southern, I’m really surprised that the SoCon has never tried to go after Jax State and then a 12th team like Belmont.

SoCon should have been better definitively but didn’t seem to commit, which was what was said to annoy Davidson and CoC to the point of departure. And VMI and the Citadel don’t do much. I don’t disagree that OVC may just be Belmont and Murray State, but I trust their consistency more than I do a Furman or Wofford staying strong. UTC and ETSU isn’t a good long bet; there’s inconsistency there. UNCG has the location...don’t know if they have the fuel to keep a thing going.

I would say SoCon totally derp’d it on Coastal. Could have picked up a contributor for both football and basketball, but, SoCon politics...

When the SoCon took Samford instead of Jax State it showed they were focused in private schools. ETSU was lucky to get back in after they left.

That’s a really good idea. For non-revenue sports and possible basketball too they could go with divisions for scheduling purposes:

East: VMI, UNCG, WCU, Furman, Wofford, Citadel
West: Belmont, Chattanooga, ETSU, Mercer, Jacksonville St, Mercer

The trouble is that I think Belmont is content with being the geographic center of their league.

I mean, that’s the lengths UTC had to take to get ETSU back. Threaten leaving the conference for OVC to get another TN public member into SoCon. I suspect that at that time, if more was known about Belmont, I wonder if SoCon would have told Chatty to pound sand and go, since they could backfill in TN with another private basketball school. I think it helped UTC that at that time, what were SoCon’s other options? UTC played it right, and now ETSU is back.
