Facility sell out JMU athletic fund raiser
He voluntarily did these things for his kids and he doesn't advocate everyone else paying for it.

This is a very consistent ethic.

I get your point and we can argue in circles but he was “taxed” to pay for someone else’s education. The fact he did it voluntarily proves he thought higher education was a good investment for his family. I will assume he would think that it holds true for more than just their two kids.

The “I did it so everyone else should or everyone else can” is probably the most ignorant and egotistic take on these boards, so I poked at his story. I’m sure his kids aren’t freeloaders, but the irony of the post was too much to pass on.

Boomer logic. Stop Uber Eats, attend CC, and work part-time to afford your education.

Guess what, I wasn't fortunate enough for my parents to put up tens of thousands of dollars for school and ended up 40k in debt while doing all of the things you suggested. By the way, Meal plans cost a hell of a lot more than going to the grocery store (so didn't have one).

It's fine. I ended up making enough where my student loans aren't a burden, but I'd be lying if I don't ask myself every day if college was worth it.

The system is broken. Education doesn't give anywhere near the return it costs. Maybe the solution isn't student loan relief, but praying you win the genetic lottery for your parents to spare you early-adulthood as a debt slave shouldn't be the answer either.

Boomer here. I agree with some of what you say especially the cost not equaling the value for some people. College costs way too much. So does healthcare but that is another subject not related to this.

I worked all four years while I was in college. My parents had six children (hence boomer designation) so no college fund for me. They did pay tuition each year out of their earnings only because I was the youngest of the six children so they had the means to do so for me. Yes, my siblings think I was spoiled. Three of them did not attend college by their own decision. One did so after a stint in the Navy. I paid my own living expenses. I graduated with $200 in my bank account but no student debt. I was grateful for not having any debt upon graduation. I was very responsible with my spending. It made my parents proud.

My perspective is why are people taking on all of this debt without being able to identify how they will pay it back? That is finance 101. You never borrow money unless you can identify the repayment source.

During my college years, we had people run up credit card debt. This was considered irresponsible at the time. Seems like the same behavior is happening now with student loan debt. No one made these students go to college and borrow the money to do so. These borrowers are not victims. They made a decision and should take responsibility for the decision they made. How on earth can anyone argue otherwise?

We have a segment of our society that makes bad decisions then cry’s victim and expects others to bail them out. Some people do the right things but could still use a little help. I have no problem with society offering a helping hand to those who deserve one. I donate money to worthy causes regularly. I don’t understand those that make bad decisions thinking the rest of us that did not, should bail them out.

It's too easy to borrow money. People know they will hear "Approved" when they apply for that new line of credit, or that 400K mortgage, or yes that student loan application. If they don't learn Finance 101 at home, who will teach it to them? Once they're in collections it's too late.

Good points. They didn’t teach it in school when I went to school either.

Why isn’t finance 101 being taught in elementary and middle school? It is essential to the “pursuit of happiness” for all of us. There was a time when the basics were taught at home but that is not the case for everyone. Sometimes parents are not good stewards of their money either even though they are otherwise good parents.

The pressure put on bankers to sell by their stockholders doesn’t help either. Credit cards and home equity lines continue to be over sold and abused today. The idea should be to payoff ones home mortgage over a reasonable period of time not be able to use it like an ATM.

By the way, loved the Paul Harvey message from 1965. He was one smart dude. I always enjoyed his pieces. Thanks to whoever posted it.

Just catching up.

Did you intentionally misread almost the entirety of what I wrote or are just semi-literate?

I’ll hope for the latter, cause the former would point to being dishonest at best.

Not a boomer if directed at me.

Point was, if you DO have the meal plan (which most on campus Frosh/soph kids are required to have) then use that. Don’t skip it then drop another 50-100 bucks a week getting meals delivered by JMs.

Why should my kids now be paying for someone else’s kid?

You want to see the price of education go even further through the roof?

Make it “free”.
