I was at the game so didn’t hear the call but I thought it was an illegal jumping call. I may be wrong, but that is what we thought while watching live. I think the UTSA player came up the middle and jumped directly over our blocker. Did anyone watching at home hear the refs call? Here’s the rule:

Quote: Leverage and Leaping
ARTICLE 11. a. No defensive player, in an attempt to gain an advantage, may step, jump or stand on an opponent.
b. It is a foul if a defensive player moves forward and tries to block a field goal
or try by leaving his feet and leaping into the plane directly above the frame of the body of an opponent.
It is not a foul if the player was aligned in a stationary position within one yard of the line of scrimmage when the ball was snapped.
c. It is a foul if a defensive player who is inside the tackle box tries to block a punt by leaving his feet and leaping into the plane directly above the frame of the body of an opponent.
1. It is not a foul if the player tries to block the punt by jumping straight
up without attempting to leap over the opponent.
2. It is not a foul if a player leaps through or over the gap between players.
d. No defensive player, in an attempt to block, bat or catch a kick, may: 1. Step, jump or stand on a teammate.
2. Place a hand(s) on a teammate to get leverage for additional height. 3. Be picked up by a teammate, or be elevated, propelled or pushed.
PENALTY [a-d]—15 yards, previous spot and automatic first down. [S38]

Looked to me like the UTSA player dove and then rolled into the kickers ankle. Definitely roughing, or at the very least a yellowcard.

He roles into the punter. Just watch the replay over and over. Clear 15 yarder.

Oh and their coach is a winner in my book. Another solid recruiting class and they will compete for the west.

Does the “running into the kicker” 5-yd penalty still exist? When I saw it, I thought that’s what they were calling. It may have been malicious, but I don’t think it was...hard to read a college kid’s head. I think we’ve all seen way worse roughing calls.

It’s gotta be hard to rushing up the middle to block a punt. Coming from the ends a player can take an angle.

When the plant leg is taken out it’s 15 yards most of the time. Had it been an upper body it would have been 5

Great vid! Punter definitely wasn’t acting. He’s got to be allowed room to land as he is the definition of a “defenseless” player.

Thanks for the share. After seeing it again a few more times, there did look to be contact between our player's arm and your kicker's leg. I don't think the contact was bad, but ankles are a very sensitive area (I know that from experience with playing and coaching basketball). So I think the 15 yards were fair. Case closed.
