Liberty may not receive bowl bid even though Flames could finish 10-1, sources told @Stadium. Reason is LU doesn't have guaranteed bowl tie-in & w/out any win requirements for teams to be bowl eligible, bowls expected to fill w/their designated conference affiliations source said

Yes, we already know that their are 7 fewer bowls, meaning 14 fewer slots, than normal, and more bowl cancelations are likely. That's almost 20% fewer slots and counting.

IIRC, the Liberty and ESPN deal means ESPN can place Liberty in these bowls:

Boca Raton Bowl
Camellia Bowl
Famous Idaho Potato Bowl
Frisco Bowl
Myrtle Beach Bowl
New Mexico Bowl

The good news is, so far, none of these have been canceled. Bad news is this is a secondary arrangement, meaning Liberty only will be placed if a conference tied to a bowl cannot fill its slot. But the NCAA has basically made everyone not on APR or infractions probation bowl-eligible. The virus could work in Liberty's favor, causing teams to maybe cancel their bowl appearance such that Liberty could possibly step in at the last minute. But it looks dicey for them.

Because of canceled bowls, there will be other schools that would normally be bowl eligible without a place to land. Is there anything from stopping a couple of available schools from simply scheduling a late December game against each other?

I would imagine there are NCAA regulations, otherwise teams would do that in normal years. Specifically, I think NCAA rules say that once you finish your regular season, you are not allowed to practice until the Spring Practice window, unless you are in a bowl game.

But again, this being a special year, I think that should be waived such that willing schools not in bowl games can schedule a game versus each other.

There is a rule prohibiting non-bowl, regular season FBS football games "after the second Saturday or the following Sunday in December" (Division I Manual, Article 17.11.4). FBS teams are already violating that rule this season, with games scheduled for the third Saturday in December, unless there has been a general waiver of the rule that hasn't been publicized.

The Sun Bowl has been canceled this year, sources told @Stadium. Tied as 2nd-longest running bowl game behind only the Rose Bowl, the Sun Bowl had been played 86 consecutive seasons since 1935. It is 4th Pac-12 bowl canceled this year & 3rd with an ACC tie-in

That's the shiny new upgraded game at the Raiders stadium that booted out the MW to match the PAC and SEC.

Noticing a trend Red States will play bowl games, Blue States are canceling all over the place. The only Dem Gov that may not cancel is Roy Cooper, probably the weakest Dem Gov around.

I dont think there is anything stopping it considering Spring Ball is on the table for many schools (and as mentioned earlier, other schools are already violating the mid-December deadline on games) . Im thinking as long as both schools involved have only played 11 games or less----they can probably schedule a game if they want to in December.

This is not political. The virus is winning with all these postpone and canceled the bowls and games.

That's 11 bowls so far, so 22 fewer teams (and counting) will play in bowl games.

The PAC has suffered the most, with a net of 4 canceled bowl games. Not surprising as they tend to play in California bowls, which are under blue control.

I wonder if the ncaa will permit teams who don’t get bowl invites to arrange impromptu bowls at the home stadium of one of the participants?
