Amazing article!

Thanks for posting. So many good insights. Coach Simrell had recruited some damn good talent for that team.

I wonder if Vince Marrow could ever return to Toledo in some capacity?

Maybe Candle could turn up the intensity and focus dials a bit. Our execution is seriously lacking under Candle. Saban would have a fit if these recent teams (2018 & 2019) were under his direction.

Go Rockets!

My man BDV27 was quoted in the article. I remember all of this like it was yesterday. So fortunate to have been a part of that team and to have been coached by Coach Saban. Those stories about winter conditioning were not exaggerated one bit. It was crazy and mentally taxing...but I'm so much better off, having gone through it. A lot of guys quit and I'm sure are kicking themselves for doing so. Those who stuck around, were tight and I attribute it to what we all went through together...we may not have gone out on night before winter conditioning, but we still went out on Thursday during the season. I remember Coach Saban going off on the team after practice, questioning our commitment...I don't blame him now...but as a kid, we thought we were getting away with something...(Saban would send GA's in through the back door at the Rocket Inn / The Stein and Blind Pig to try and catch us out...we would see them come in and run out the other door. I'm sure they saw us, but never turned us in). Fun times...should have been 11-0 and in a bowl game.

I sat in on a few scrimmages/ workouts in the GB back then...
The man commanded a lot of respect...
Very colorful language at times...

Tampa... is your son the preferred walk-on with last name Barry. I was checking names, locations, and 1990 roster. I assume that is your son. Your previous post was very interesting.

Congratulations on your championship and Your sons’ good fortune.

Go Rockets!

Yessir...thank you! Dylan has been up there since late July. He’s getting acclimated and likes it there. He was disappointed that their season was cancelled, but hopeful that they get a chance to get going later this fall.

I took this tidbit from the article to unlock a mystery:

But Dan Vargo, a defensive back, said the feeling of respect Saban demanded was immediate.

Now we know what BDV stands for....and of course, after checking an old program - verified his number was 27. So there you have it - as Paul Harvey would say "..the rest of the story..." (jkg of course)
