New President
Not sure about this one...

Blade - University of Toledo board members will put off searching for UT’s next president and have the university keep its interim leader until at least the end of 2022.

The board unanimously voted Monday to extend Dr. Gregory Postel’s contract as interim president until the end of 2022. He took over as interim UT president July 6, with an annual salary of $500,000, after former UT president Sharon Gaber left before the end of her contract to take a job as chancellor at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte.

RE: New President
Haven't really had a chance to see what the guy is made of given the current circumstances...would like to see what he has planned for UTMC before he's given his walking papers.

RE: New President
From what I understand his interactions with Board, academic leadership on main campus at UTMC, plus faculty, have been very positive, having said that it was the decision of the Board, and perhaps a surprising one to extend his one year contact to now 2 1/2 yrs and postpone national search until late 2021 or early 2021. I noticed he again stated he has no intention to be the permanent President here at UT and his family still lives in Kentucky. Guessing it allows the Board and President more time to resolve the UTMC situation (improved for FY21 but from one time federal and state monies, still issues with sustaining finances long term there) and address UT budget and enrollment challenges.

Yep, this gives the man time to do what he was brought here to do after this pandemic hopefully winds down early next year. I just hope this doesn't turn into a Interim VP of Enrollment situation, where the person who was brought in to fill a hole was essentially collecting a check for not doing a thing for a year and half while the seat they wanted down in Columbus was opening up.

Always a risk I suppose (plus as interim he could still bolt for another job at any time, with his experience in health care management he could get a much bigger gig for twice the salary at any time), but from what I have been told he has been pretty serious about "rolling up his sleeves" and going after the issues, said he wants to leave UT in better position (budget/enrollment) than it was when he arrived, suppose only time will tell.

I imagine that the ability to bring in candidates is limited in the current environment. Get past the election and the COVID of the year and you can attract a better candidate

Gaber was interviewed and announced at UNCC before Covid began, I believe in December of 2019. She stuck around at UT for a period of months after the announcement was made.

She announced her resignation in April, and was interviewed as a finalist in late March.

That would be incorrect, the announcement of Gaber leaving UT for UNCC become public in April 2020-even at UNCC it was not known until April as entire search was confidential-members of the search committee had to sign a non-disclosure agreement, no one publicly at UNCC even knew she was their new President until April 2020. Gaber did stick around for a periods of months after the announcement was made: April to early July.

So yes college President searches were going on around the country during COVID and still are - and could be done here at UT but Board decided otherwise.

Difference here is that search at UnCC likely started before we hid in our basements.

Harder to start a train moving in this environment

RE: New President
harder, but not impossible, there are a number of college President and Provost (VP Academic) searches underway at major institutions across the country right now, Board here made decision to keep Postel longer as the UTMC, enrollment and budget issues will take longer to address than his one year contract would have allowed.
