RE: Has App....Lost a step?
It’s all about making plays, Marshall made more and it cost us the game, I remember one play in the first half where you qb made a bad decision, and threw a pass that should have been picked by our linebacker inside your 30, but it went off his fingertips, its such a fine line between winning or losing when you have 2 evenly matched teams, when an opportunity presents itself, you gotta take advantage of it.

Marshall was Phil Steele's #1 most improved team going into the season, and was facing an APP team that is still adjusting to a new coach. I think that played a part. This will likely be Marshall's best team for a long time, and APP will get better as the season progresses.

Old farts will get it.

The body ain't cold yet.

I didn't say they wouldn't be good, I said they aren't dominant this year like they have been the past couple years.

That AState team with its 3rd coach in 3 years in 2013 still won the conference, it just wasn't nearly as dominant in doing so, and got lucky in the end that they did win it.

Coach Clark is a player’s coach, that why the team vocally campaigned both internally and on all the socials to hire him. Being a player favorite coach does not necessarily mean the players will work hard for him, he might be more lax and permissive and “one of the guys”. The players need to step up and fight for the coach they chose. The biggest single thing I saw yesterday was a lack of fire.

We somewhat ran into that with Mike Sewak in the past. He won more than his share of games (like 75% or close to it) but he had a hard time winning the big games and the rivalry games. IIRC, he was referred to as "Mike" or "Sewak" instead of Coach Sewak by many of the players and he had some discipline and grades issues that may have ultimately cost him his job. His losing too many big games and not getting further in the playoffs (and the unlucky fact that he was following PJ and Erk) were the public reasons for it, but I have heard that there were several rumblings internally about the internal issues of the program at the time that added to it.

When you have a coach that does really well and he leaves and you hire that guy's top assistant, that assistant is generally not going to be better. There's some exceptions like Chris Petersen at Boise but those are a small minority.

IMO the App State AD made a safe hire and has no reason to swing for the fences. Clark will almost surely not be a better coach than Scott Satterfield but the possibility of him running the team into the ground and being a Tyson Summers is very low.

With like most teams it comes down to the QB play. Most teams have good enough skill payers to get by but if you don't have a capable QB you are just an avg team.

In 18 and 19 Marshall had a QB that didn't have the accuracy over 25 yards and was limited on what the offense could do. Grant Wells can do everything Isaiah Green couldn't, and the playbook our OC has is now wide open. With Wells only being a RS freshman he will only grow and mature into a better QB.

So to say this will be Marshall's best team for a long time is misleading.

Also to claim Appy is getting used to a new HC is correct but then again it isn't like they had to learn a whole new playbook and terminology. They may have had 3 coaches in the last 3 years but those coaches came off of the same staff, so it was just plug and play.

It is more likely they miss some of their senior leadership from last year and haven't had anyone step up and replace those players. When and if that happens this year it will be a whole new team for the folks in Boone.

As Ive said "The demise of Appy, I think has been greatly exaggerated"

Another factor for the hire was the players really made their feelings known that they wanted Clark, I don’t know what would have happened if Gillian ignored them and hire from the outside, maybe they stay or they leave, but the hiring of Clark pretty much stabilized the program, everyone from the players to the fanbase was happy. Now, having said this he had better meet expectations, all that goodwill is out the door if 2 yrs from now we are struggling.

It pretty much goes both ways though if you think about it. Where there should have been a pick, like you say, there also should have been a fumble recovery when your QB fumbled it straight up in the air with your guy at the right place, right time, outjumping dudes who didn't even know the ball was loose yet. Even with the turnovers which evened out pretty much, (you shanked a field goal, we opted not to kick one and go for it, we both lost out on 3 points there) We were driving and we threw a pick on your side of the field, the same thing happened to you. The biggest thing that didn't go your way was losing that touchdown due to the fumble. Putting things into perspective that would have made the score 17-14 if it didn't happen or 20-17 if we chose to kick our FG and you made yours. The one thing, I know most won't agree with, that seemed one sided was the officiating, about half those Pass Interference calls should have been a no call when both players are pushing on each other. Other than that, its all about perspective, you guys have a tough team. Cheering for you the rest of the way.

I agree with most of this. The definition of a good program is "next man up" but that has it's limits. Like a senior laden offensive line like we have. If all or most choose to move on after this year, Grant will lose a good deal of his trusted protection and that kind of development "next man up" is a bit different. I hear that the 2nd level is waiting their turn but we will see. At skill positions, the next man up saying, definitely comes into affect unless your guy is a randy moss, no one replaces a special player like that. A good player can be replaced, special players at our level is once a decade or two or three lol What I saw saturday with App, was they had the next man up going. Talented receivers regardless of what they lost, good running backs, very accurate QB who seemed like a good leader. Good program..

If yall are anything like us (and I know your expectations are), it won't take two years. The goodwill will be gone MUCH sooner than that if you slide even the slightest bit in some eyes.

You mention the pass interferences, I wonder if the calls had anything to do with the big 12 crew that ref the game, think about it, they ref in the most wide open offenses in the country, they have teams that routinely throw 35, 40 times a game, I just wonder if they have been conditioned to reach for the flags alittle quicker than a normal crew. Sounds crazy, but who knows.

Your probably right, still I think Clark, along with almost every other coach should all get a pass this season on their performance, just too many distractions this yr to formulate a fair opinion on the job their doing.

Possibly, rule of thumb though is if its a shoving match etc, who you gonna call it on, so no call in most circumstances. I don't watch enough B12 games to know how close they call that stuff or the method. Instant call is grabbing jerseys and arms etc, and we did get caught a couple times on that, think yall might have once as well. But you are right, who knows, there isn't consistency on those things at all across the board. What the refs are saying when they do that is they don't want contested throws, they would rather have the receiver be given a cushion to catch the ball instead of fighting for it. Crazy how a contact sport keeps being pushed to where contact can't be had.
