NCAA violations by Conference
In a different thread there was a tangential discussion regarding NCAA violations as the relate to conferences. It got me curious and as I was looking for a reason to procrastinate from my class reading, I decided to use the NCAA database to analyze major violations by conference. Given that what is a “major” violation encompasses a wide range of wrongdoings, and some wrongdoings are so extreme that the NCAA can not even punish them (looking at you UNC) this is likely a completely meaningless list. But whatever, like I said it is better than reading. I used any team that received a “major” punishment from 1/1/2000 to 9/17/2020 (https://web3.ncaa.org/lsdbi/search?types=major&q=). The list is in order of the percentage of teams in each conference that received a violation. Also, I’m a bit tipsy so it is possible I made a mistake, but I invite anyone to correct the data.
Con.;----# with major vio.;----# of vio.;----% of teams punished;----Violations/#of teams
B12-----------------9-----------------19------------------90%--------------------------1.9
SEC----------------12----------------26-------------------86%--------------------------1.857
P12----------------10----------------20-------------------83%--------------------------1.667
AAC-----------------9----------------14-------------------83%------------------------1.273
B10-----------------11---------------20-------------------79%------------------------1.429
Sun Belt-------------8----------------14-------------------60%-----------------------1.167
MW-------------------7 ---------------10-------------------64%-----------------------.909
ACC-------------------9---------------14 -------------------60%-----------------------.933
BE---------------------6----------------8-------------------55%-----------------------.727
MAC-------------------5----------------7-------------------42%-----------------------.583

Schools that are deemed to big to fail don’t get charged or penalized with the same offenses as the other schools. If there is a penalty it is usually a leaser blow.

A lot of those "major" violations aren't major.

For example, Cincinnati's 2011 case was "The case involved violations of NCAA legislation relating to impermissible recruiting telephone calls." The violations were almost all in the women's basketball program (which is ridiculous because our WBB team was awful at the time).

To me, that's not really "major."

Sorry, chief. Look at the dates (21st Century) and conference search criteria of the original post.

It was a sincere question. Glad to see our conferences are running relatively clean ships.
