We are actually going backwards. For all the good Turner has done, and to be honest he hasn't been given enough credit for what he's done, we are moving backwards in rankings and it's hurting us.

I know Tulsa was hurt tremendously by a reduction in the importance of the alumni giving rate. I think they reduced the weight of that input some more this year as well. I'd imagine that's hurting SMU too.

RE: 2021 US News College Rankings
tulsa is sinking at an alarming rate in these rankings..lol

when the aac was created the #3 ranked school in the league and "according to US news" an elite academic institution (at 75)..they are all the way to 143 now in just 8 years (in a university time frame is extremely short)..i didnt check every school but just from a quick glance at historical rankings..while there have been some to have similar level jumps up...i dont think anyone has fallen as far as tulsa

but i wish people more interpreted usnews rankings correctly .. usnews ranks it from the students perspective, its "if you have already been accepted which school would be the most worth it to go to".. student life, and jobs after college are included..but most notable 4 year graduating rate is like 25% of the equation. usnews doesnt rank who is academically superior at all but that's how everyone interprets it.. a school with extremely strict academic standards where students might have to retake classes or do it at a slower place will have a crazy disadvantage over a school with super easy classes where you graduate on time. but the 1st school had higher academic standards but ranked lower

RE: 2021 US News College Rankings
ehh.. USNWR has absolutely nothing to do with institutional quality. The judge of quality is how the schools are seen by highly selective employers (banks, professional services firms, etc.), clerkships (law school) / academic meat market and the like

Nationally, our conference is basically

- Regional powers (not national targets): SMU and Tulane
- All the same: everyone else

In the Public School only rankings, Memphis press release says we have moved up 9 spots to #126 in USNWR rankings, and #2 in Tennessee.

RE: 2021 US News College Rankings
Cincinnati has slid a bit in recent years. Others on the Cincy board have said it might have to do with our push to increase enrollment, leading to less selective admissions. Hopefully our new president will tighten things up a bit in the coming years. I don't advocate for public schools being Ivy League level picky, but there are plenty of open admissions type public schools in Ohio for the borderline and average students.

Compared to what? If that comparison is with other large public research university's with a similar mission and the metrics are based on academics and research then ok. But these rankings are not close to that and are very flawed in their methodology. They are basically a popularity contest. Don't take them as indicative of anything.

Louisville remains ranked between Minot State and Carbon County Community College. Still above Boise, though.

idk how we aren't top 100 yet. Elon being in the top 90 really bothers me.

Temple (and USF, for that matter) would have already crossed into the top 100 but for US News changing its definition of "National University" a few years ago. As a result, the Elons, Marquettes, Santa Claras and Villanovas of the world can be ranked as "National Universities" if they paste together a few doctorates of Art History or whatever (essentially just for this purpose).

Did I mention that the rankings can be manipulated? Ask Northeastern University how it's done!

i was explaining this earlier.. 25% of the equation usnews uses is pure graduation rate...
temple has a 43% 4 year graduation rate..elon has a 80% 4 year graduation rate

it is the side effect of being in a major city and a public school..city schools have students who can stay home and take their time..and its easier to take breaks when you are commuting from close to home...its harder when you moved to out of nowhere, taking a break means up-heaving your whole life..

10 years ago houston was unranked in us news (only ranked top 180-ish at the time i thnk) but was ranked top 80 in the us in the ARWU rankings ... the difference is arwu is based off academic accomplishments/endowments/accomplishments of graduates does not account for graduation rates , more measures where will you get the best academics ...houston 10 years ago had arguable the worst 4 year grad rate in the nation...because usnews became "the standard" UH has become obsessed with improving 4 year grad rates and been slowly improving in that regard

They also added a factor for the percent of students who are from low income backgrounds. I assume it hurts private schools some, particularly those with a lot of wealthy students.

The rankings are based on peer rankings and assortment of factors in the link. It should give greater weight to grad rates, student selectivity and graduate indebtedness, you know the things a student should care about.
