It’s College Football Saturday!
The ACC and Big 12 are playing.

Indiana high school football is halfway through its season.

The NFL plays tomorrow.

Going to be an interesting 24-48 hours in the Big Ten.

The confluence of medical science, young people, COVID, money, and decisions all playing out on gridirons across the country.

Here at home, no Tribe football.

I hope it all works for these football schools. Certainly some potentially scary outcomes.

RE: It’s College Football Saturday!
That article is completely focused on issues raised by fan attendance; the article is silent as to issues raised by athletes actually playing the sport.

But at least the citizen is being given the choice on whether to attend or not attend. After seven months of this, it’s time. The curve has been bent. Everyone has masks. We’re good to go. 05-stirthepot

As for me, if the Tribe were playing at home today, I would skip the tailgating, but I’d find a remote spot in Cary Zable [ ie student section :-)] to watch the game.

Not to mention all the resources spent on making stadiums safer that could have been spent on making campuses safer.

I have absolutely no problem with teams deciding to play. They are, fo the most part, in their own mini bubble and tested often. Fan attendance is my issue. To simplify it as simply a person's choice to attend or not attend isn't really fair to the reality of how this virus spreads. It flourishes and exponentially expands when exposed to groups. The general practice for containment is contact tracing. How can we expect decent contact tracing in a crowd of 20,000 from various areas. These aren't just isolated students from campus. These are people from all over a state already reporting much higher rates of infection than other places ahead of the curve. Some taking personal protection and spread more seriously than others. If the "mandatory" mask wearing is anything like I witnessed with the Texans/Chiefs game, it was more a suggestion than a requirement.
I absolutely hope everything goes smoothly, people distance, wear masks, and there are no meaningful upticks in spread. I love football and am looking forward to tune in. The human nature I've witnessed the last couple of months, though, leaves me skeptical for positive results.

We're not even considering the tailgating. Of course it will be limited around the stadiums, but people are going to have large parties to watch games on TV. 100% chance.

The pictures from Notre Dame stadium may ... may ... begin the process of re-opening the country.

There is no way the Big Ten, after seeing those pictures, can stay on the sidelines.

Finally some momentum to resume living life to the full!

Campbell failed on a 2 pt conversion to pull ahead with :14 left but recovered an onside kick. Or not. Rekick and failed. GSU wins a squeaker over FCS Campbell.

33 Georgia Southern players, including 7 starters, were held out of the game. Not sure why they didn't postpone it.

As much as I miss full blown sports, I'm having a hard time getting into this hit and miss college season. The risk for any of this stuff is whether college football and basketball will lose some fandom simply as a result of shifts in focus.

Virus impact at Va Tech forces them to postpone yesterday's opener with UVA next week with no new date set right now. Illustrates
the fragility of anyone's season.

Big Ten resumes 10/23 and 10/24.

Have to keep on living ... life has always been fragile ... we’ve kind of lost sight of that basic fact over the past several decades.

The SEC hasn't even played yet. Once Alabama and Mississippi schools and Georgia and Florida start superspreading the virus, there may be a different opinion about it. But it will be too late because the Big 10 will still proceed just to save face.

Some PAC 12 schools are making a push to start their fall season in October. I can't imagine LA County will clear USC & UCLA to move forward on this. The county has enforced the strictest COVID-19 "Safer LA" laws in the country, unless the individual is attached to a specific protected group.
