RE: John Thompson passes away
you can make the case that the 3 biggest figures in DMV basketball ever have passed away here in the last 7 months... Morgan Wooten, Wes Unseld, and now Big John.

Huge loss. Prayers to the Thompson Family and the entire Georgetown community. For all of his accomplishments, and there are many, his 97% graduation rate was an incredible success. Getting to see his son become HC at Georgetown I'm sure was a great accomplishment for him in his own right as well.

RIP and may JT's legacy live on for many decades for the school and community.

It's just remarkable how quiet this has been. You know it's the offseason, but just complete silence. Total bombshell.

The news story being quiet? Or was he sick?

That he was sick. Had absolutely no inclination on this whatsoever.

I mean if Chadwick Boseman's story is any indication, it is that icons can keep health concerns private and away from the public eye. It makes their heroic contributions even more impactful.

It's interesting that some can and some really can't.

RE: John Thompson passes away
I did not know JT was in poor health.

Just posted on the main board:

A legend has left us.

On the Georgetown and Big John theme ... the 1985 Final Four was unusual in that it had three Big East programs (GU, Villanova and Saint John's) and ... Memphis State. As a long-time Tiger fan, that was quite exciting, though Nova topped Memphis in a very boring semifinals game (52-45). Memphis later had to vacate that Final Four appearance due to the use of ineligible players (I figured I would beat to the punch one of any number of you who might have pointed that out in a response post had I not.).

Thompson helped define what was the original Big East. He, Jim Boeheim, Rollie Massimino and Lou Carneseca were as strong a group of coaches as any other single league boasted back in that era — which many contend was the "Golden Age" of college hoops (from essentially the late 1970s to the late 1980s). It was that time span that multiple things happen to radically redefine college hoops: the rise of ESPN, full integration, the creation of the Big East and the days of now legendary then-college stars such as Jordan, Ewing, Olajuwon, Worthy, Barkley, Bird, Magic, Isiah, Dominique, etc.

Big John was a huge part of all that. May his memory always live.
