EMU baseball is underrated and it would be great if Oerstrike housed a minor league or independent leageu team
That was looked at 15-20 years ago. At the time the deal-breaker was state law prohibiting alcohol on state owned campuses. That has changed since. The minor leagues are today contracting so unfortunately I don't know what the current interest might be.
I do wholeheartedly agree with your premise Dan. I hate that our athletic facilities are off the student living campus but because they are, they present ample parking and a relatively easy in and out venue for non-EMU events in the heavily populated area of SE Michigan.
EMU used to host an early season multi-game weekend for area high school football teams and that event moved to Wayne State. U-M women's basketball played their NIT championship game at U-D's Callahan Hall instead of the Convo a few years ago when Chrysler Arena was occupied with a B1G gymnastics tournament. EMU holds home games for Lincoln but does not host a regional for the MHSAA. Why?
I don't claim to have inside knowledge here. Still I wonder if we might be better off turning over management of our athletic facilities to a separate entity like we did with athletic ticket sales and Eagle Crest golf course. We have nice facilities in a great location, in essence we are similar to a hotel, much of our costs are sunk and the revenue of renting unused space is totally incremental.
Oh bye the way I worked at Eagle Crest today and the course was at capacity when I left at 9:00 AM, there were easily 100 vehicles in the golf course parking lot. I live down the street from the U-M course and I noticed they had less than 20 vehicles in their parking lot on my way home. I suppose a 12.4 billion endowment allows U-M to do so.
