Definitely jealous of you guys and your league. Kudos to your leaders for having the courage and knowledge to safely play the game of football. Giving your student-athletes opportunities of a lifetime. Something every single player in the MAC will miss out on for an entire year...still can't get over that. NFL kicks off Thursday night.

RE: Could COVID force the MAC into FCS?
It is what it is, but long term ramifications of a possible lost season will definitely cripple the MAC financially, along with the national perception ...
The present fall out for the big 10, and pac 12, will also have some underlying negative financial outcomes /and hamper recruiting efforts for years to come, filtering down in some degree to the MAC and MW conferences...

Personally, I don’t believe there will ever be any changes in the MAC that involve teams dropping down to FCS. IF and that’s a wild IF, that happens then those 6-7 or so teams left will be fine and have no need for searching for a new conference. Because I guarantee you Marshall, James Madison, and WKU would be more than willing to join them in the MAC, IF the MAC would have them.

Uh... NO THANK YOU! We've tried it twice and it didn't work out. We recruit the South East, the majority of our Alumni Clubs are in the South East. Also the MAC has never been a good cultural fit for us.

While to be scrupulously fair, Marshall only filed the divorce papers in this century, with it being the MAC in the 20th century ...

... if Thundering Herd supporters are in dispute over whether Marshall would simply accept given an offer, I will take that on it's own as putting the claim in some doubt.

All other things equal, I reckon an FBS school doesn't move to another conference unless the move is seen as an appreciable step up in either status (Louisville to the ACC) or security (Nebraska to the Big Ten). Since the MAC under the hypothesis would not represent either for a move from CUSA, I have some doubts about the the claim myself.

I also don't think WKU is just walking away from a conference with MTSU without some long and hard thinking.

And if there was instability in the CUSA/SBC complex as a consequence of P5 realignment aftershocks, where WKU might find itself "betwixt and between" an East Coast conference and a Texas focused conference ...
... WKU/MTSU as travel partners would be more appealing than WKU alone.

With it's footprint, the MAC hasn't had to DO travel partner scheduling, but either WKU or JMU would be a lot more feasible with travel partner scheduling than without.

Have to disagree a bit. Our present league is a cluster bomb and does nothing for us. Travel expenses are out of site and in an age where the AD will get less state and university funds, we must look at all options. I think many fans would like going back to the MAC, IF an invite would ever come. Being able to travel by car 3, 4 hours or so and see many away games is tempting.

We recruit the SE but not as much as we used to. And once Doc retires who knows where our focus may be.

Frankly, the G5 leagues need to look regional. The MAC basically has that. That means the Belt and CUSA need to look at switching some members and creating an eastern based league and a western based league.

CUSA in its present form isn’t cutting it.

I’ve always thought a MAC north/south setup would work...

North -
Toledo
Western Michigan
Central Michigan
Buffalo
N.Illinois
Akron or Kent State

South -
Ohio
Miami
Marshall
WKU
Ball State
MTSU or James Madison

I know I am omitting a few MAC members, (Eastern-good facilities/decent past success/bad support, and BG-decent facilities, decent past success/bad support), but overall these other 12/14 schools listed, have the good facilities/good past success/decent support in both football & basketball to make this a pretty good and compact G5 conference... IMO, JMU with their budget and long term commitment in facilities and vision, could fit in very well...

Dear cmufanatic,
With todays technology, what do you expect? If, one is breaking rules, laws, that are enforceable, that is exactly what is going to happen.

Dear cmufanatic,
Maybe you have not heard that some colleges have kicked students out of school for violating the school's rules for violations of Covid. Yeah, I hope they fight the fine too, and lose. We already have too many idiots on college campuses.

The rumor of Marshall going back to the MAC got started at a meeting of the MU Board of Governors in January of this year. The board told the MU president that CUSA was causing MU to run a deficit and that maybe MU should look at rejoining the MAC to control travel expenses.

You need to look at our Roster, we have 25 kids from Florida alone LOL. We have 81 kids from below the Mason Dixon Line.

The last year we were in the MAC we played FIVE games in the state of Ohio. Hard to recruit the SE when the parents can come to watch them play. Sure you can fly up from Georgia or Florida for a mid November game in Buffalo or Toledo.. It'll be a blast LOL.

Cool story from 20 years ago SMH. We played the Toledo Dildos in four MAC Championship games and won three of them. So... whatever.

But on a side note. Marshall recruiting the SE with 81 players from south of the Mason Dixon line in comparison to Toledo that has 26 players from south of the Mason Dixon line. (This part is for SVHerd who said we don't recruit the SE much LOL).

Last two games at the Glass Bowl have been a blast...
41-36 (2001 MAC championship), 42-0 (2000)...04-cheers

Cool story from 20 years ago SMH. We played the Toledo Dildos in four MAC Championship games and won three of them. So... whatever.

But on a side note. Marshall recruiting the SE with 81 players from south of the Mason Dixon line in comparison to Toledo that has 26 players from south of the Mason Dixon line. (This part is for SVHerd who said we don't recruit the SE much LOL).

Another cool story would be a home and home series with the Herd again ... 04-cheers

We've got a home and home with Marshall coming up over the next few years.

Although nothing in life feels very "definite" anymore.

RE: Could COVID force the MAC into FCS?
First of all thrilled the MAC maybe playing this fall.

For those without millions due to money game cancellations some perspective. Things could change, but 57 athletic and support staff will be furloughed or have the hours reduced. Fall games can not be considered and perhaps a game with UConn and hopefully a few others.

Quote:The University of Massachusetts athletics department announced Thursday that it will institute significant cost containment measures by instituting a reduction in work hours and/or furloughs for 57 athletic department staff members. The action is part of a university-wide workforce reduction announced this week, and is being implemented as part of a detailed analysis of the department's financial position during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The fiscal year 2021 budget already contains major cost saving initiatives to overcome a $5 million budget shortfall. Earlier this summer, a majority of coaches and administrative staff on employment contracts agreed to voluntary salary reductions ranging from 2% to 10% through June 2021. Further, seven positions created through the university's Voluntary Separation Incentive Program (VSIP), as well as five other vacant positions (both coaching and support unit) due to the university hiring freeze, will go unfilled this fiscal year. The reduction plan also includes significant (12%-15%) cuts to department operations, including administrative and sport budget reductions using a shift to regional scheduling and reduced travel for many of UMass' 21 teams. The department will also have increased reliance on fundraising accounts to support essential operating expenditures.
