For those without millions due to money game cancellations some perspective. Things could change, but 57 athletic and support staff will be furloughed or have the hours reduced. Fall games can not be considered and perhaps a game with UConn and hopefully a few others.

Quote:The University of Massachusetts athletics department announced Thursday that it will institute significant cost containment measures by instituting a reduction in work hours and/or furloughs for 57 athletic department staff members. The action is part of a university-wide workforce reduction announced this week, and is being implemented as part of a detailed analysis of the department's financial position during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The fiscal year 2021 budget already contains major cost saving initiatives to overcome a $5 million budget shortfall. Earlier this summer, a majority of coaches and administrative staff on employment contracts agreed to voluntary salary reductions ranging from 2% to 10% through June 2021. Further, seven positions created through the university's Voluntary Separation Incentive Program (VSIP), as well as five other vacant positions (both coaching and support unit) due to the university hiring freeze, will go unfilled this fiscal year. The reduction plan also includes significant (12%-15%) cuts to department operations, including administrative and sport budget reductions using a shift to regional scheduling and reduced travel for many of UMass' 21 teams. The department will also have increased reliance on fundraising accounts to support essential operating expenditures.

UMASS has never had to use sandwich bread for a hamburger bun and it shows!

Wait... Massachusetts is the second wealthiest state in the country and UMASS has 30k students! Is this correct?

Sounds to me like there is some money mismanagement going on.

First would say that football is within fiscally responsible guidelines. Without a conference, media and CFP money and losing a 1.9M dollar buy game the budget took a serious hit. Never mind loss of revenues. This is for all 21 sports. We could discuss cutting some and substituting say Women Crew and selling the boat house on the Connecticut river and replacing it with volleyball, a MAC and A10 sponsored sport. In an additional COVID-19 fund raiser to the normal giving programs, you can see in the link and rowing fell short. Men's Lacrosse hitting out of the park. Note: The link does not show giving to all sports, unrestricted, which pushed by the AD department and has the best perks. Individual sport programs are controlled by those clubs, but the AD can request money for specific items.

I suppose Idaho is a recent example of dropping down. But they aren't that far removed from FCS to begin with (mid 90s?), and their membership in the Sun Belt made no geographic sense.

When the WAC exploded and Idaho, NMSU was left holding the bag, Idaho's days were numbers, Sunbelt gave them a life line for a few years but once that expired, writing was on the wall. Sucks for them, but when you can't or won't invest in your main sports, that is what the outcome is. The kibbie dome is a joke, never met NCAA standards for FBS and didn't appear they were going to upgrade or build new. I am not completely sure how NMSU is able to stay FBS, highly doubt they will ever be successful.
