Officially the number is not that high, 30s or 40s. Rumours are that it is much higher. The bars are full. Some frat parties are going on off campus since they aren't allowed to do it in their houses.

Maybe there are false positives?

Sweden has thousands of false positives from Chinese tests.

I wouldn't say giddy, but it seems like the ones whose conferences canceled sports are hoping for doom and gloom because they know the ramifications down the road if the fall sports do go on without a problems. Those conferences that canceled will have such a disadvantage monetarily as well as in perception and recruiting. This will be a monkey on their back for years to come. Therefore their only comfort is repeating over and over like a robot how things are bad and how conferences are crazy for trying to go forward with sports.

Down here in Florida, even though we were the but of all the liberal media, even though our case lever blew the socks off levels in NY, our deaths are a fraction and our current case per 100k is getting much lower. I believe Orange county in Orlando is somewhere like 12 per 100k over the last 2 weeks. NYC where the media claimed as a success story ignoring the 10s of thousands of deaths is at close to 8. All things being considered, Florida is gonna be just fine and a lot of the other Southern states will too. I think football will not be a problem.

As someone that lives in Indiana and tracks the data daily, things are improving in Indiana. There are still cases, there are still hospitalizations, but the deaths are much lower than the peak of the crisis.

A recent report suggested that New York was an example of herd immunity. It didn't spike this summer when most everyone else did.

How can they have herd immunity when the herd left for Atlanta, Florida, and DFW? New York's infection rate dropped because thousands fled the city. And gee guess what? While that was happening rates spiked in Atlanta, Florida and Texas.

And that (bold) is based on what evidence? Are you suggesting New Yorkers fled to Atlanta, Florida and Texas?

I agree with that, but who says a decision has to be clear-cut and easy? Lots of life decisions, especially big ones, often have major pros and cons to them. Part of becoming an adult is making such decisions.

I do know one thing - if I was a player, I would like to have the power to make that decision myself, not have it imposed on me by a canceling conference.

I think this matter should be clear cut and easy. One of the NCAA's stated principals is this:

"Intercollegiate athletics programs shall be conducted in a manner designed to protect and enhance the physical and educational well-being of student-athletes."

I fail to see how conducting a contact sport that necessitates travel during a pandemic without a vaccine equates to "protecting and enhancing the physical well-being of athletes."

This article shows that the USA actually has had one of the most strict lockdowns in the world.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/covid-lockd...od=itp_wsj

Beyond that, the "selfish" are IMO those who are in an economic position to endure an economic collapse, and thus tut-tut from above about the need for mass societal lockdowns. These are the ones who favor stopping the virus at any cost, because they will not be paying that cost.

To me, mass lockdowns are a very blunt instrument to stop a disease that kills about 1 in 300 it infects, and those that it kills are readily identifiable by certain risk factors. That suggests a far more targeted approach that involves far less collataral damage.

Mass lockdowns would be appropriate if CV was deadly in the way that, say, rabies or a black mamba bite is deadly.

Well, you know, there's nothing inherently wrong with changing one's mind.

To me, there's zero wrong with having football games when the campus is closed to face-to-face classes but students are taking classes online. That's entirely appropriate, as online learning is a part of college life these days.

Now if students are not taking classes at all, F2F or online, that would be a problem.

Agree 100%. We may butt our heads about college football nuances, but we seem to certainly agree with how politicized by the left this whole pandemic has become.

To the point, has anyone noticed how well the S&P, NASDAQ, and DOW JONES are doing? The pandemic has destroyed Mom & Pop business, small chains and industry reliant upon in store purchases outside of Walmart, Kroger, Publix, etc. So I categorize those as the tut tut must shut crowd. They are actually gaining from the loss of others.

But there are two more groups pushing the shutdown as well.

One are the have not pseudo intellectuals who want to see everyone they envy suffer and the other group is akin to them and is comprised of people who hate our way of life and want to see it in turmoil

Everyone else wants to accept risk and get back to trying to live before they lose everything. The intolerance is being supported by those who profit and those why envy, and those who hate. It's not most people, but a vocal minority amplified by media.

But make no mistake about it. Most people want to cautiously and responsibly get back to their lives and those of us in the most affected demographic need to be the ones to take the extra precautions, IM0. We each much accept the level of risk we are willing to take, liability needs to be nullified for this pandemic, and those who want to play sports should be allowed to do so at their own risk and those who do not should be permitted without ill consequence to refrain from it. After all that is what the right of self determination is all about.

The only thing forcing us otherwise is "Liability" which if it is legally nullified with regard to the virus will give the American Public the right to choose. I would provide one caveat however, the wearing of masks and social distancing would remain as an act of responsibility to our fellow citizens.

Sounds like most people just want freedom. Which is why the majority of immigrants came to the United States in the first place.04-cheers

I agree with everything you said. I could be interpreting it wrong, but it sounded to me like he meant no students on campus means no games. That's why I felt letting students back on campus again would be a test to see if there has been an improvement in the situation and allow the season to continue. But I guess it falls back on this need to show "academics and amateurism >= sports". Like you said if they are all still attending classes, just completely online, why should that matter?
