How is the Top 25 poll going to work?
Hypothetically, if half of the teams are playing in the fall, and the other half are playing in the spring, then would there be two separate polls? Or would the schools that haven't started playing yet be ranked alongside the schools who have already started playing in the fall? And will the final top 25 poll have to wait until the spring teams are finished playing?

They’re ranking the top 25 teams playing in the fall

Neither the AP/coaches nor the CFP is waiting for spring

If college football is played, and I still believe that’s a big if, the fact x number of schools chose to sit the season out, doesn’t change the polls or playoffs. You gotta dance with the one that brung ya.

Ok, but how about in the fall. Are they redoing the preseason polls? Also, when do the restart the polls, at the end of September or early September. By the time the SEC plays their first game, the AAC may be 2 or 3 games deep.

See my thread on the 1943, when 53 of 119 major programs took the season off due to WW2, including 8 of 12 SEC members and 7 of 10 Pacific Coast Conference members. Life moves forward. The polls include only those schools that play.

RE: How is the Top 25 poll going to work?
What would probably make sense is to have a Top 15 poll instead of 25. Of course, I admit that is a personal bias of mine. I don't think it ever makes sense to try to distinguish between teams past #15 even when everybody is playing. Too many poll voters just use those lower spots to recognize teams that they think deserve recognition for a good season even if they don't really believe they are one of the 25 best teams.

The Top 15 means something if only to sort out which teams should be in a CFP and which should be considered for a major (NY6) bowl.

Will coaches who’s teams aren’t playing still get a vote in the Coaches poll?

I believe the first AP Poll comes out at the end of next week so we will find out then.

SEC schools may fall behind at first due to a late start

On a related note, I presume they'll have to reconfigure who's voting? As of right now, the following "coaches" (said because it's been alleged that half the time it's not the coach themselves but an underling/AD who fills out the ballot) are slated to vote:

Craig Bohl, Wyoming
Troy Calhoun, Air Force
Jason Candle, Toledo
Paul Chryst, Wisconsin
Pat Fitzgerald, Northwestern
James Franklin, Penn State
Scott Frost, Nebraska
Todd Graham, Hawaii
Thomas Hammock, Northern Illinois
Bryan Harsin, Boise State
Clay Helton, Southern California
Lance Leipold, Buffalo
Tim Lester, Western Michigan
Mike Locksley, Maryland
Scot Loeffler, Bowling Green
Doug Martin, New Mexico State
Jay Norvell, Nevada
Lovie Smith, Illinois
Jonathan Smith, Oregon State
Frank Solich, Ohio
Kevin Sumlin, Arizona
Mel Tucker, Michigan State
Kyle Whittingham, Utah

are all slated to be sitting out the 2020 football season. Do they still vote in a sport they're not actively participating in?

If it was up to me, I'd keep all the coaches in the polls, even the ones from the PAC and B1G. They still have a coaches perspective on the teams.

I always thought the idea of active coaches voting was a terrible idea. How are you supposed to run your team and try to evaluate 129 other programs?

I doubt many coaches are the ones actually completing their own ballots.

Well, they would certainly have enough time to do it themselves instead of delegating to an underling. 07-coffee3

Yep. And if anything they now have MORE time to watch games

What I would like to see is for voters to only select their Top Ten teams (10 pts for #1, 9 for #2 etc.) , and then show all teams receiving votes, however many teams that is.

Scouting is an essential part of their job.

A coach scouts all 11 teams they face. That means watching every play of every game those 11 teams played. It's not 129 teams, but it's probably almost half of CFB. That's way more than most reporters bother to watch.

And this is a fine reason, among many others, I would detest being a college football coach. You truly have to eat, drink and breathe the profession. There is little time for hobbies or interests outside the job.

Like it normally works:
