Scholarship limits and the roster
It will be a chaotic year in recruiting to say the least. If you are at your limit do you bring everyone back? Will coaches on the hot seat or trying to jump start a rebuild (Rutgers BGSU) load up on grad transfers? Will transfers get immediate eligibility? (or just high profile qbs)
My prediction is a lot of early enrollees get told to stay home and safe.

This is where the NCAA needs to come up with a sweeping policy that every school has to follow

RE: Scholarship limits and the roster
Gonna be tough to do a blanket policy if the conferences that plan on playing in the fall actually complete a fall season.

Do you give those schools extra scholarships too or are the conferences that opted not to play just SOL?

Would be easier if everyone was on the same page but...

UNC Chapel Hill just cancelled in person classes due to infections. MSU 100% online as well. Personally I don't necessarily agree with these actions BUT I see no way any University can deem in-person classrooms with students wearing masks and properly distanced, unsafe, yet allow other students to participate in a face to face sport like football. It is ludicrous and financially ridiculous considering the associated liability.

Jerry, I take my dog walking around the MSU campus. Masks are now required indoors as well as outdoors anywhere on campus property.

All these schools are going to announce online only the second they cash their residence hall checks

I don't worry so much about football because it is tested player vs. tested player (and with social distancing by bad DBs 03-lmfao "Coach, I was told to stay six feet away...").

What I would fear more is Friday night parties and lip locking by a tested FB player and an untested social partner (who may not even be a student at the university).

So we try to keep students socially distant in class and then they go out lip locking on the weekends. Sounds like someone has locked the front door but left the back door wide open.

Sounds like what happened back in March. We closed the front door (China) but left the other door (Europe) open, until we finally tried to close it.

Sources: The NCAA Division I Council decided today that fall sport student-athletes can compete in any amount of competitions this year and it will not count as a season of eligibility. This still needs to be approved by NCAA Board of Governors on Friday."

Wow!!! I guess I can understand. My assumption is that some teams may play partial seasons and the NCAA doesn't want to decide what comprises a season. 4 games? 6 games? 8 games?

Surprisingly logical decision made by the NCAA.

Kiffen at Ole Miss is making noise about the conference players from those not playing in fall being granted immediate eligibility in the SEC, ACC and Big 12. Glad I don't have to make a call on that one.

Thankfully we have some P5 allies in fighting against that. I don't the Big 10 or PAC 12 want their lose players to transfers to those conferences either. Not just the little G5 standing up for itself.

Agree.

We need to quit thinking of college athletes as like pros. A rising senior at UofM is going to transfer to say KY, enroll and play FB next month????

Really????

Sounds more like what we have with pro leagues where a player becomes a free agent during the off season and moves on. That is not what college sports are about.

RE: Scholarship limits and the roster
I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that C.C. will not max out the number of scholarships he could in Dec (or Feb).

If he thinks some of his seniors will come back in 2021 for their "Senior +" fall season I'm not sure C.C. would want say 100 scholarship players.

There are direct costs (and accounting costs against the athletic department), issues of playing time, coaching and training such a large squad, etc.

After all, the travel squad is what 55 players???

One question I raised elsewhere is could schools like EMU go heavy into the mid-year JUCO transfers? Do some coaches say "I want to win THIS year"?

players generate revenue for their employers and should have rights as workers

Actually they are students albeit highly talented athletically students. They take classes. They must meet the requirements of their school's program to graduate. They are subject to timing requirements on admission and transfers, evaluation of transferable credits, etc.

Someone can't simply say, okay I have 3 years at school X. I want to transfer next week to school Y and graduate next spring.

If they were workers, they could give two weeks notice and begin the next job.

RE: Scholarship limits and the roster
Dan and I fundamentally disagree on the issue of paying players. I think a college scholarship is a tremendous value and if a student-athlete attends a University with the intention of pursuing a professional football position, that is little different than someone pursuing an accounting degree in hopes of a business career. Preparing young people for later life is the University mission. Politicians need to exert influence on the major pro leagues, any qualified, talented young athlete (i.e. Emoni Bates) who wishes not to attend college should be provided an avenue to do so. The NFL and NBA have simply used the NCAA as a no-cost minor league, that is clearly wrong.

That being said, I cannot rationally justify prohibiting a Justin Fields at OSU from transferring to an SEC school for the fall season. Universities discontinue certain academic and sports programs occasionally, and of course those affected are free to transfer immediately to another school. The B1G, Pac 12 and MAC institutions suspended their fall football season, I simply don't see a legal justification for not allowing their athletes to transfer to schools that have not. Any other action would imply a contractual obligation and thus classify such student-athletes as "employees" as Dan described. The NCAA could be accused of conducting semi-pro league.

In the end, however, all NCAA schools need to realize that while their sports programs are businesses, and while they compete, their industry does resemble private industry. If an automaker went out of business would the other car builders benefit? Hell yes! NCAA football, by contrast, depends on national appeal and genuine competition for that lucrative television money. The SEC and ACC could empty the top talent from other conferences and suddenly be the "Kings of Nothing". In the fall of 2021 let's assume a transfer decimated Wisconsin team is scheduled to play LSU and thus is a three touchdown underdog. Who is turning on the TV to watch that? Most importantly what network is spending big money to televise it?
