Monday Musings Eagle Crest
What year was Eagle Crest built?
Did EMU own the property before? I had heard it was a dairy farm.
Is the course too small (not enough yardage for D1 college golfers) to play on?
What a beautiful course.
Awesome range too.
Does it turn a profit?

RE: Monday Musings Eagle Crest
It is too short for NCAA mens play. The objective is to get to 7100 yards so new tee boxes were built on holes 14,15 and 16. Hole 1 can now share the back of the tee box with 7 as well. The course is being stretched wherever possible.

Interesting fact about the land the course is built on. EMU does NOT own the land, it has a sweetheart lease for a dollar a year from Ypsilanti Township.

Word has it that the course has been marginally profitable. Greens fees have exploded this year as golf has been a beneficiary of the Covid 19 pandemic. Food and beverage sales unfortunately have been crushed on the flipside.

It is a beautiful course, it probably would have a better reputation if it were more exclusive like the U-M courses. It, however, is open to the public and gets a whole lot more play and the subsequent wear and tear of such.

I'm working there this summer after a few years at both Ann Arbor municipal courses. EMU manages the course through a LLC titled "Eagle Administrative Services" and I must say I have been thoroughly impressed with the operation especially when compared to my previous employer. It's a great place, it reminds me of the Convocation Center, a wonderful venue that is substantially underrated.

Maybe over Labor Day weekend Trump and Obama can play a match. Each put up $10K and the money goes to Swoop's pantry (is that what its called?). 03-lmfao

The late Bill Fennel used to tell me about how underrated parts of EMU's campus are.

This is but one.

Karl Litten designed about every other course it seems in Palm Beach County. Really some nice courses including Eagle Crest.

RE: Monday Musings Eagle Crest
One of the really neat things about the course is they listen to golfers and constantly work to improve the course.

The 5 fairway was slanted to the woods bordering The Crest and North Bay Park and golfers complained about losing balls in the woods. No problem they moved the fairway left and now the rough to the right catches a lot.

Hole 11 had a huge tree obstructing the green and the women's team did not like it. No problem, goodbye tree.

Right now they are moving the cart path that moves transversely across the fairway of the "signature" course hole 16.

Dan the brush on the left side of the fairway is GONE to make way for the new cart path. Of course you can still go right into Ford Lake but I think you will like the change.

As long as Ford Lake is still there - i'll be losing balls off the tee

The golf course and hotel property used to be the Bella Vista dairy farm owned by the Palma family. Henry Ford owned the land just south of there along the east side Whittaker. The Seaver farm was on the west side of Whittaker.

The "Crest" averaged around 4,000/month rounds in recent previous years, this year they surpassed 6,000 easily. Coupled with the fact that it is the priciest public course in the county, that increase translates into some serious revenue. That revenue is also largely incremental, the cost to generate it is minimal unlike a manufacturing operation that must build additional product to do so.

I cannot access the link you provided Steve, but I believe there are two main reasons for the golf resurgence. One, it is an outdoor activity and as such deemed as reasonably safe. Two, golf is a time consuming sport, the Eagle Crest scorecard projects a round should take four and half hours. With Covid 19, our lives have become far less "busy", in fact we now have more time to burn and golf replaces movies, gym time, travel, etc... Is this permanent? Who knows.

RE: Monday Musings Eagle Crest
From WaPo:

Now, after surviving the spring, the golf industry is thriving, coming off a stretch of bustling activity with little precedent.

Golfers played 10 million more rounds in July than they did a year ago, a 20 percent increase. It’s the largest bump recorded since Golf Datatech, the sport’s leading market research company, started tracking the monthly numbers 20 years ago. Play was up 14 percent year over year in June and 6 percent in May.

Though analysts say some 20 million rounds were lost during March, April and May, the booming summer has more than made up for that deficit and rounds are up 3 percent from last year. The August numbers haven’t been tallied.

Equipment sales are booming, too. They reached $388.6 million in July, the highest single month that Golf Datatech has recorded since it began tracking retail sales in 1997.

********

But I like the headline best:

"Golf, the official sport of social distance, had its best summer in decades"

**************

The one of the only times I remember social distancing on the football field was when Randy Moss would run a fly pattern and no one would be within six feet of him... Lol.

remember when the lions got wailed on by the titans and chris johnson (i think?) ran all over them? THAT was some social distancing

Scott Mitchell needed to learn social distancing from linebackers on the other team.

James, I am intrigued. What other pursuits have you been unable to engage in and thus golf has become more desirable. Do you think that your golfing will remain the same if and when we return to normal? This fascinates me, please let me know what you think.

Bye the way I have golfed LESS this summer than in the past five years. Working at golf courses, I have golf privilege's but due to full tee sheets it has often been difficult to find a tee time, especially when the course has paying customers.

i think the best case scenario for the golf industry is that playing more this summer reminds players who havent gone out as much in recent years how much they like it and it the momentum carries them for future seasons. i think i'll golf less next summer than i did this summer - but more still more than regular summers?

Dan just so you know hole 16 will be a par three for the rest of the season as we are re-seeding the fairway after moving the cart path. I've lost way more balls off the tee than every before unfortunately.
