Schools like UMass and Buffalo just aren't serious candidates now. If say, Northwestern or Boston College were to drop football, neither the Big 10 or ACC would even think about them.

Of course, 20 years ago, noone would have thought about UCF or USF.

Agree with UMass, but UB fits the kinds of things that University Presidents and the folks making the decisions on who to add make (AAU, strong and upgrading academics, upgraded on-field and on-court performance, flagship state University, contiguous to existing conference). If UB was called NY State or NY Tech instead of a city name and hadn't dropped to D3 because of former SUNY philosophy, they would have potentially grabbed the Rutgers spot by outperforming them in the Big East.

To be fair UMass is 3 hours closer to NYC than Buffalo. And we have the same problem, UMass isn't close enough to Boston to get headlines except when we had Marcus Camby. If the UMass main campus was at UMass Boston or Framingham State UMass would probably be the S***

Buffalo fits the conference footprint better than UMass. They are closer to almost half of the conference than they are to NYC.
