If JMU & Elon play, they should be excluded from spring football.

What would be your rationale for punishing them?
Punishing? If they elect to play a season counter to what nearly every conferencemate is doing, they are doing so to gain a competitive edge in recruiting and on the field. They effectively burned their season in the fall so, IMO, don't deserve a 2nd season.

If my kids eat dessert before dinner, they don't get to eat dessert again after dinner with the rest of us.

It would absolutely be a punishment if the CAA were to prevent them from participating in regular conference play, if it should happen in the Spring, because they choose to play non conference football in the fall. And it doesn't matter one iota if they are making a choice that is different than other CAA schools. Each of those schools has the exact same freedom of choice and they've made their decision.

Each state and each institution is tackling this virus in different ways. There is not a best way, and no consensus on how it should be done. Therefore, freedom is the best option and let each do as they wish.

I think it depends. The NCAA has a limit on the number of games a team can play in a season (I think it's 11 this season?) If JMU/Elon play a 3 game OOC schedule this fall and then their 8 conference games in the spring, then sure, they should be able to participate. If they build even say a 6-7 game OOC schedule this fall, then I think there will be bigger issues than what the CAA wants for them to play a full conference schedule in the spring.

That sounds about right. They get 11 games...budget wisely. If they play 3 in the fall, they'd probably have to go undefeated in the spring to make the playoffs.

Absolutely agree with freedom of choice but choices have consequences, good and bad.

Yeah, you don't get to sneak in two football seasons. This isn't about "punishment", which is an odd way to put it to me. It's pretty straight-forward in my opinion.

Yep, that was my point. UNCW, Drexel, and Hofstra fans would snap if JMU & Elon played an additional mbb season.

Unless there is NO college football this fall I am almost 100% certain that Spring Football will NOT happen. It is like when I tell my kids I am thinking about buying something they asked for, but we will talk about it “later”. So basically zero risk for JMU and Elon to pursue football in the fall.

I honestly don't understand the desire to play in the fall unless somewhere these teams are thinking that there will be fans in attendence. Spend money for nothing seems like a bad business model.

I've read that testing just the football team could run a school 15-20k per week. Factor in all the other sports that would also be getting played, and all the weeks in the season, and you would be looking at half a million, or more, just for testing during the fall season.

You don't need to be a business major to realize a huge increase in costs + a huge reduction of revenue is a losing combination.

Edit: This Ole Miss blog estimated the costs to just the football team at over half a million, for testing and all other safety precautions. Other sports have fewer athletes, and would cost less, but all in all for a fall season you might be topping a million dollars to cover everything. And unfortunately for us, the virus doesn't care how much money your school's athletics make, the tests and precautions all cost the same. This also assumes nobody is hospitalized, where a school would likely face a lot more medical costs. https://www.redcuprebellion.com/2020/6/1...-to-campus

If they play this fall after the CAA postponed (not canceled) the season and just one player dies, the school will be sued beyond recognition. They want a competitive edge (like JMU needs it) and they may really regret the decision. Let's hope everyone stays safe.

829 cases and 16 deaths in Rockingham County so it's not a hotbed but they'll have to travel to some games.

1718 cases and 39 deaths surrounding Elon.

Considering we are all discussing colleges and universties, it would be nice if science and facts were injected into the conversation. In the ENTIRE COUNTRY, exactly 45 people under the age of 24 have died from this virus since Feb 1. Under the age of 34, there have been 193 deaths IN THE ENTIRE COUNTRY.

Here is a link from the CDC. If you see the graph under "Age and Sex", hit the arrow to take you to page 2 of Microsoft Power BI. It's all there for your viewing pleasure. One of the safest places you could be is on a college campus amongst college aged students. And you would be even safer in k-12 schools. When did insititutes of higher education and college educated people turn from facts and embrace fear?

And BTW, if basketball season came and UNCW had the option to play and chose not to, we'd be pissed at our administration, but wouldn't say a word if others schools chose to play. Fat chance Hofstra would peek their heads out of their caves over UNCW anyhow, but for the sake of argument we'd be ok with them playing.

82, the discussion about the virus and associated deaths are on the COVID-19 thread. We've gone over that ad nauseam. I'm in the be careful & responsible but get back to some level of normalcy camp, but the CAA ruled no fall sports. Players will be exposed and may pass the virus to older coaches, staff, and others. Given the PL ruling and so many schools canceling OOC play, I believe the CAA made the correct decision. Our student-athletes are already going to be swamped with big academic changes, confusion, and whatever else so piling a weird sports season on top of that is probably a bad idea.

So, it's not about why the CAA canceled, it's that two schools want to go rogue and gain an advantage. They are entitled to do so, but they'll have to live with the consequences.

Doesn't this show 157 deaths from people between the ages of 15-24? And about 1.000 for everyone under 34?
