No CAA Football (announcement on 7/17 supposedly)
Looks like CAA football to be cancelled but teams can play independent schedule if they wish. To be announced tomorrow

https://twitter.com/marcdavissports/stat...4695571457

Guess we are down to 0 games after our other 3 OOC games were cancelled

So when are we raising the banner for our 2020 unbeaten season?

Aren't the Karens the ones saying we should be playing football?

W&M won’t be playing unless ALL students are back on campus. Wouldn’t get your hopes up.

No CAA Football (announcement on 7/17 supposedly)
If the CAA moves the season to the spring, I'd play starters for 1-4 games, redshirt guys like Kiely, and treat the season like a preseason...give young guys and depth players the experience.

Awful news for players set to graduate this winter...namely Crist & Ripley as they are two that come to mind.

If the report in the Richmond Times Dispatch is true, why aren’t we trying to put together a football schedule today? The RTD is also reporting that FBS teams can count two FCS wins towards bowl eligibility. Seems like opponents will be available. My desire to keep supporting an athletic department that seems more focused on social justice polemics than playing games is starting to wane.

I know it may all fall apart, but why not try?

Inevitable. And unquestionably the right decision. Also fail to see what keeping students safe by not playing football in the midst of a deadly pandemic has to do with "social justice polemics."

If the season is canceled, all of the current players will retain their year of eligibility. This will cause a cascade of issues over future seasons. It's ultimately about the kids, and I believe it will be a benefit to the kids, but the number of grad transfers that will pop up in the coming years will be mind blowing.

Add Towson and Delaware to JMU and Elon playing this year...along with UVA, VA Tech, ODU, Liberty, VMI, the rest of the SoCon, etc. Not surprised to get left in the dust again by Elon. Maybe we should join the Patriot League after all. That way we can cower in fear with them over a virus with a fatality rate of less than .1% for the under 25 population. Might as well shut down the dorms and go totally online at this point, just to be extra safe.

RE: No CAA Football (announcement on 7/17 supposedly)
A) Do we know for a fact we're not trying to make a schedule?

B) The fatality rate for under 25 year olds is low, but that doesn't mean they're not affected. There was a W&M cheerleader who had pretty severe symptoms for 2 months after the CAA tournament, and it seems like some people are suffering from (potentially) long term lung damage.

C) The players are gonna go back to campus, where they interact with older professors, older support staff, older coaches, etc. W&M has about 700 professors, if the disease spreads through campus, several would almost certainly pass away.

Personally, I think not playing is the right and responsible decision, at least in the fall. The risks seem to way outweigh the benefits, not even factoring in the huge financial losses we'd have without fans or tailgating. If all goes well I would love to try for a spring season.

Kinda surprised that Huge wanting to protect her players (if we don’t play) means we should move to the patriot. Huge will do what’s best for the kids.

No, no, Tribester wants to watch football. That should be our top priority. Somebody write a letter.

I'd be thrilled with it given the outlook for a bootleg fall season. It's not like this is a random "spring season" out of context.

I'm just hoping for a CAA basketball season. The smaller number of players involved, compared to football, makes it potentially doable. Maybe the CAA leadership could implement a regional schedule to limit travel.

This is the right call. I applaud the administration for putting player, staff, and student safety first.

We’ll all miss the season, but the reward isn’t Worth the risk.

RE: No CAA Football (announcement on 7/17 supposedly)
Tribe Club Supporter,

William & Mary stands fully in support of the Colonial Athletic Association Football Board of Directors’ decision to postpone conference competition for the Fall 2020 football season.

The university also made the difficult decision to postpone competition in all Division I Fall sports including football, soccer, field hockey, volleyball, and cross-country.

The health and well-being of our student-athletes, coaches, and staff – and the full campus community that supports them – must be our top priority. W&M Athletics is part of the overall educational mission of the university. Providing an environment that ensures the greatest opportunity for academic instruction to occur for all students is paramount. Thus, the university’s philosophy for the Fall is to radically limit visitors to campus – and that includes visiting athletic teams.

While we are heartbroken for the student-athletes and their families impacted, we have been thoughtful and deliberate in our discussions and decision. It is our hope and intention that if conditions safely permit, sports could be played in the Winter and Spring and we will evaluate the options in the months ahead.

Samantha K. Huge
Director of Athletics
