RE: A thread to share positive news about Covid-19 Rx and vaccine developments
This is the second interim look at the Sputnik V vaccine. Over 95% effective. Note that the vaccine arm is 3 times larger than the placebo arm. 39 total infections with 31 in the smaller placebo arm and eight in the vaccine. Unlike the Oxford vaccine which uses a chimpanzee adenovirus vector this one uses two human adenoviruses - the primary adenovirus is common and booster is uncommon. So, in a way, sort of like the small dose / large dose in Oxford (which worked best).

RE: A thread to share positive news about Covid-19 Rx and vaccine developments
It looks like there are going to be at least 4 or 5 effective vaccines. They can't start vaccinating people on a massive scale too soon.

In the mean time, it's helpful for everyone to make sure that they wear their masks properly.

Part of the problem is that too many people are wearing the masks incorrectly. The mask has to cover the nose (!), not just the mouth.

Everywhere I go, I see people having to adjust their mask frequently, because it keeps slipping off their noses.

The masks that they've purchased aren't a good fit if they keep slipping off the nose.

There are ways to remedy this, such as putting an extra piece of cloth that covers the nose securely - under the mask.

If it helps anybody, I'll share this - - I'm using a piece of lycra (spandex) that fits tautly over the nose, to make sure I don't inhale covid-19 due to a loose mask.

Take good care, everyone, and have a happy Thanksgiving, wherever you are - - even if you are alone with nothing but a can of cold beans.

Count your blessings!

Good post. FWIW, I add the below.

1. Wash your hands before and after adjusting your mask.
2. Take mask off by the loops.
3. Frequently dispose or wash your mask especially when soiled and when exposed to crowds for a prolonged period.
4. Masks do not substitute for social distancing, avoiding large crowds, and hand washing. Like adding layers of Swiss cheese, masks are a supplement to help prevent spread.
5. Type of mask matters. Generally, three layers work better than one (for example).

RE: A thread to share positive news about Covid-19 Rx and vaccine developments
I am skeptical of vaccine reports until I see evidence of their effectiveness. Several articles have referred to "science by press release."

Covid-19 vaccine efficacy results are not enough

Quote:There are some important nuances to the recent vaccine efficacy announcements. Beyond the fact that the results were announced in press releases rather than peer-reviewed papers (although companies say they will publish in scientific journals after the trials are complete), the reported efficacies here are mainly against disease — i.e., people getting sick — and not infection, i.e., people carrying the virus. One of the frustrating things about SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, is that it can spread between people while causing few or no symptoms. Though the Oxford-AstraZeneca trial did regularly screen volunteers for infection, how these vaccines perform at preventing infection rather than just disease remains unclear at the moment.

Earlier press releases this year citing "no serious side effects" didn't reveal fevers of 103° and hospitalizations.

As soon as they unblind the results they issue a "press release" to *satisfy insider trading rules.* It takes time to write and peer review a paper once the results are known - but that will happen also. If I recall, all of the press releases stated there were *no serious side effects.*

All that is very standard. Normally, everyone isn’t following our trials to the minute, so no one really pays attention to the “promising results on arthritis treatment”, and it isn’t on their radar until it’s on the market.

Headline from today's Wall Street Journal:

"Pharmacies Add Freezers, Train Staff to Handle Covid-19 Vaccination Drive"

The start of vaccinations - per the article - could be mere weeks away.

50% a people say they will *not* take the vaccine when available to them. A problem that will have to be addressed. Especially since, while the vaccine prevents disease, there's no evidence that people vaccinated will not be contagious. In fact, a very early study in monkeys suggest, and I forget the vaccine, that active virus remains in the upper respiratory tract for a time. So there's a danger the vaccine itself may create a new army of asymptomatics. All the more reason to be vaccinated in my opinion.

RE: A thread to share positive news about Covid-19 Rx and vaccine developments
.

The statistics show - clearly - that America is rapidly nearing the peak of the Covid pandemic.

Please, note - - both for your own safety and to help protect the lives of others - - that in order to prevent infection with Covid, the mask must always cover the entire nose - - not just the mouth.

Everywhere we go, and on news broadcasts showing everyday people wearing masks, we see people who are wearing masks that aren't big enough for their face, don't fit properly, or keep slipping off the nose.

This is one of the reasons why so many people are becoming infected, including some of those who are wearing masks, as they know they should, in public places.

If any air at all can come around the sides of the nose, through the top of the mask, with other people in the area, a person is very much at risk for a Covid infection, even if they are wearing a mask the whole time.

The reason is that any unfiltered air can easily contain the virus, and as little as one single breath of virus in the air can cause a severe infection.

Please remember this and pass it along to others, because it can help to save lives.

It's also very important for people to wear the mask consistently - all the time - when they are out in public, where they could catch Covid through the air from others.

It's best to think of Covid protection the same way that you would think of working around extremely dangerous toxic fumes, or being in a wartime situation during a chemical or bio. weapons attack. It does little good to filter just 90% of the fumes out, because it can be so dangerous to inhale even a small amount.

It does relatively little good for a person to wear a mask if it's only covering their nose or mouth, or if they keep taking it off and putting it back on. To be effective, it has to be worn the whole time in shared areas, when other people are around. Wearing it only part of the time could easily take the life of someone you care about.

Please pass it on. Your words may help to save a life!

Thank you! 04-cheers

Headline from 11/30/20 Wall Street Journal seen during my morning reading:

"Moderna to Ask Health Regulators to Authorize Its Covid-19 Vaccine
Timing could make shot the second for U.S. use by year-end, alongside Pfizer and BioNTech’s vaccine"

https://www.wsj.com/articles/moderna-to-..._lead_pos1

Good news, indeed!

Highlights:
94.1% effective with two doses
Like Pfizer and BioNTech vaccines, this one uses messenger RNA
Safe, but some people got headaches and other mild to moderate reactions (e.g., pain around the injection site, fatigue and headache - especially after the second dose).
Distribution could take place within weeks upon FDA approval

Also important to note that there were 30 severe cases of covid-19 in the study and one death. ***Zero of those were in the vaccinated group.*** So, at least in this study, 100% efficacy against severe disease. Here's the press release

Also, the Moderna shot stores up to six months in a regular freezer compared to Pfizer's shot requiring storage at temps of minus 70 degrees Celsius or below.

An academic comment - published in the open-access, peer-reviewed, scientific journal Nutrients - on the *strong association* between vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency and Covid-19 death.

In the USA, the Food and Drug Administration will review review the vaccine on 12/10/20. Authorization could quickly follow and then the shot should be available. Distribution is already occurring.

I imagine it'll be difficult unscrambled it all to figure out who wins the Nobel Prize for this one :-)

The FDA review is actually 12/10/20. I conducted an edit.

RE: A thread to share positive news about Covid-19 Rx and vaccine developments
Derek Lowe, in his 'In the Pipeline' blog, sees a lot of spurious vaccine side effect claims coming this month. It goes something like this ----

If I were to simply wave my hand over the head of 25 - 30 million people during the month of December here is what you would see ...

Some would unexpectedly died a week or two afterwards

Some would receive a cancer diagnosis in the next weeks

Others would develop disabling migraines, report nerve damage, vision loss, and on and on..

Yet no one would think any of this would have been caused by the waving hand over their head. Instead they would understand it's a product of the big numbers - 25 to 30 million. However you place the wave over the head with a shot in the arm and watch what the media, social and otherwise, does with that. So brace yourselves. He explains it much better at his site, linked below.

covid virus is 60-130 nanometers in size

n95 mask will work on that size virus

the only people wearing n95 mask are in the medical field

no one you see at events, or stores, or restaurants are wearing n95 mask

so my analogy
