WM Football All-Time Team: SPECIAL TEAMS
Continuing our All-Time series, we've put together our list of W&M's top Kicker, Punter, and top 2 Returners.

Check it out, and let us know who we missed! Especially interested in folks' thoughts on top Returners, as that could really go a lot of different ways.

LET'S GO TRIBE.

There are only three returners that I'd consider adding to the list. Sharper (I know, I know), Dedmon, and Dick Pawlewicz. Dedmon returned kicks and punts so that gives him a bit of a leg up.

As for punters, Windmuller was the best we ever had that I saw, but he was always hurt so I'd give a nod to Miller. Christie was a good punter too.

Dick was a Tight End, was he not? How'd he ever end up returning punts/kicks?

Pawlewicz also played some wide receiver. He was big and deceptively fast. He caught some big time TD passes. 3rd Team AP All-American his Senior year. Was with the Jets in 1977.

RE: WM Football All-Time Team: SPECIAL TEAMS
Pawlewicz was more of an H-Back type. He actually lined up as a running back on some plays. He was very fast and a tank in those days. He was just a freak who was good in the open field. Back then they had two QBs. Billy Deery was a run first option QB and Rip Scherer who was pass first. Pawlewicz was versatile. Those teams also had players like Frankie Prochillo, John Gerdelman, Dough Gerhart, Tommy Regan, and a back who didn't play a ton, but who is one of our finest alumni in terms of football legacy, Ivan Fears. Look Ivan Fears up, and you will see a true football veteran.

Would you consider a category for Kick blocking under special teams?

Who says these two won't show up in other categories, to be announced? 05-stirthepot

Mike Leach

At The College of William and Mary, during his junior season, his 58 receptions as a tight end were the second-most at the position in school history (to Glenn Bodnar's 69 catches in 1984) and his punting average set a single-season school record of 44.4 yards.[1] The performance earned him Associated Press second-team All-America and second-team All-Atlantic 10 honors that season. He also earned first-team Walter Camp All-American honors at tight end as a senior.[1]

1. 44.4, Mike Leach, 1998
2. 43.8, Hunter Windmuller, 2015
3. 43.6, Hunter Windmuller, 2014
4. 43.2, Nick Dorka, Jr., 2014
5. 43.0, David Miller, 2010
42.8, Russell Brown, 1971
42.8, Buddy Lex, 1942
8. 42.4, Drake Kuhn, 2012
42.4, Steve Christie, 1988
10. 41.8, George Eberle, 2019

I forget what a luxury our kicking game was for a while (Miller, Kuhn, Dorka/Windmuller). I never really worried about our kicking game in that era.

We've had a good kicking game as far back as the early 70s (begining of my fandom). We never had any issues with kickers or punters until lately. That's why it's so confounding about what happened at the end of the Laycock run. I thought Eberle was an answer, but that went out the window

WM Football All-Time Team: SPECIAL TEAMS
I can't recall the year - maybe 2012 - we missed a few FGs to lose a close one in OT to JMU. I don't know why I recall JL finally saying "screw this" and went for it on 4th; which, we didn't convert. Why does McBride getting called for a BS pushing off in the endzone in that game sticking out?

Did all that really happen or am I mixing up games?

I also think a similar event happened a couple of years later vs JMU. Lost another close one to JMU because of poor kicking.

Our place kicking game has been off for several years and surely cost us some wins.

Was at this game. Whoever started before Carpenter (Kuhn) either was having a miserable game, or got injured. Carpenter, who was solely a Punter at the time, I think was called upon for a kick or two -- relatively cold and out of practice.

If we had hit a couple of those, we would have put nationally-ranked JMU away on the road. Tough to see.

Even despite the kicking woes that day, I was very surprised to see Laycock go for 2 and the win (which obviously didn't work out) -- out of character for him.

Edit: Just located the post game write-up here

That's what it was...JL didn't go for it on 4th, he went for a 2 pt conversion. So frustrating.

No fault of our kicking game, but which year was the "we can't stop JMU from running right and they can't complete a pass" game? I mean, I was homicidal watching that from the JMU students section.

I hate JMU.

I hate JMU. It would be nice if we could get back to more even footing with them.

That would have been 2010 when we were #1. I was at that game as I believe many of you were. If a wr backward screen counted as a pass, they completed a few, but it didn't.

McBride was amazing in the game in Harrisonburg in 2012. My group was really down when the FG from 30 yards was missed that would have won it. My favorite FG memory was the game winner on the last play in Harrisonburg in 2004(which I think is still the Tribe's last win there). The 2012 game was maddening up there and featured a QB who comes up in conversation around here for his untapped potential due to injury. The Tribe has had more than its share of QB injuries. None were as damaging to a season than the one at VMI to Mike Cook.

We had our RB Dae’Quan Scott at QB that game too. Believe his official passing stat line was 0-1.
