Yikes, why so sensitive?

I think most readers realized that my comment was not an accusation of ignorance on your part, but simply a reference to the fact that the entire NCAA approach to timekeeping -- countdown clock instead of counting up, match time kept by a timekeeper instead of referee, stop-time instead of running time, audible horn at 0:00 -- is out of the ordinary for the sport of soccer. The oddities of the NCAA rules are a well-known topic in the sport, which the mention of "buzzer beater" (whether parodic or satirical or joking or any other intent) naturally brought to mind. Fairly recently the NCAA rules committees jointly recommended conforming to the rules of the rest of the sport, but a higher panel within the NCAA blocked their recommendation:

Geez, what's eating you?!?! Conversations often have momentary sidebars. Such sidebars do not constitute a "focus". More generally, no one of us is the conversation police.

It's basically the same as the (American) football rule, that the game doesn't end when the ball is live or on a defensive penalty. It's just that with rugby the play is a bit more fluid so that "last play" can take a lot longer.

1999 World Cup Play-in game to the Quarterfinals, Argentina led Ireland by 4 points, I think it was 27-23, but Ireland had the ball in the attacking zone when the clock expired. Ireland kept getting restarts but could not push it in. The game ultimately went 11 minutes of extra time until Argentina got control of the ball and killed it. The Buenos Aires stock exchange actually shut down for about 15 minutes.

Rugby used to have the same stoppage time rules as soccer. In fact, for the RWC semifinals in 1999 at Twickenham Stadium, London, the only time visible on the scoreboard was the time of day. The Aussies and Kiwis got that changed, and now the scoreboard clock stops when the referee stops time, so it is actual time. The buzzer goes and the team with the lead tries as quickly they can to kick the ball into touch (out of bounds) or to get possession and then kick into touch. Interestingly, you can kick it out behind your own goal and that ends things too.

Bella Kilgore had her 3rd goal of the season yesterday. When your goalie can Bend It Like Beckham, that's an impressive secret weapon.

Also really like how she didn't just 'watch' her kick. She was running back to defend before the ball even hit its apex.

North Texas also starting to get votes. They are one of our two losses (Houston).

RE: Rice Soccer 2020 Schedule
The Owls are hosting UTEP tonight in the regular season finale. Rice has only won one CUSA regular season title in school history (also one co-title), but because of how the conference is set up this season, a win tonight would only give us a CUSA western division title. Rice hosts the conference tournament next week (and would probably face ODU in the 1st round of the tournament based on how the next two days of conference matches should go).

The Owls are winning 2-0 in the 2nd half currently.

Rice is 9-2 on the season. The fewest number of losses we've ever had in a year is four.

Score holds. 10-2 on the season.

Think we could get an at-large if we at least make it to finals?

RE: Rice Soccer 2020 Schedule
I don't know - it might be a tough task even with the one good win over A&M (which is a nice win, but still it's not as impressive as the volleyball win over Texas).

It looks like 29 conferences are playing soccer this year (no Big West or Ivy - same as volleyball and basketball?). So that leaves 19 at-larges. In 2019, there were 64 teams but the Pac 12 and ACC got 9 bids apiece! The Big 12 had 6, the SEC and Big 10 had 5, the WCC had 3, and the American and Big East had 2. Everyone else had 1.

This link seems to have a good look at the various conferences and their up-to-date standings.
