Congress May Torpedo The 2020-2021 Football Season Before It Starts
U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Cory Booker (D-NJ) introduce legislation today to prohibit the COVID-19 waivers that some colleges are requiring their athletes sign in order to workout on campus. Already looking at vastly reduced seating and ticket sales---many schools might just throw in the towel if they cant get any down side protection with that waiver. The College Athlete Pandemic Safety Act would block schools from any blanket Covid19 waivers, instead empowering athletes to enforce their rights in court. Its basically an invitation to sue the school if you get Covid (though I have no idea how you'd prove that anything specific the school did or didnt do caused you to get it). lol.....A weird year keeps getting stranger...and dont forget----National NIL legislation is being introduced as well.

At least UConn and Rutgers will have an excuse for this year's win-loss records.

Excuse? The first season in years with an equal number of wins and losses ought to be grounds for celebration.

Right, it makes no sense to treat this virus differently from any other illness or injury that a college athlete could suffer.

Exactly. The players sign an injury waiver every year. It may include other illness's---I dont really know. Even High School players sign them. The reality is not a single school district in the nation would have football--or a lot of other sports---without them. I actually am curious if such Covid waivers are only for athletes. My guess is every single student is going to have to sign one---almost certainly those living in campus housing.
My guess is the bill will go nowhere. Every business in America is wanting some protection from this---and they will probably have to get it in order for many stores/offices etc to stay open.

Correct - a normal waiver should cover it. If you need a special waiver because of extra danger, then maybe that should tell you to shut it down.

Honestly---I think they will. The season will probably start---but Im going to be shocked if the season actually gets completed. I have a feeling it wont last more than a few weeks. I just dont see how your going to be able to protect the players or fans. Even with social distancing---how are you going to do concessions? How are people going to eat and drink with masks? How are you going to do the standard stadium anti-terrorism entry search for weapons. How can you keep 13,000 athletes Covid free for 5 months? What abut the coaches and support staff---many of which are in the prime danger age for Covid complications. When you really start looking at the fine details---I think its just going to be a train wreck.

why don't we just start football basketball baseball in the spring? At least they'd all get a season, that way. If they can't do all 3, then no baseball since the other 2 bring in more money.

The schools don't need additional waivers. If the school didn't previously make athletes (or other students) sign a waiver that shields the school from any possible liability for a measles outbreak, or a toxic gas leak, or a building collapsing, then don't make them sign one for a covid outbreak.
This is what insurance is for -- insurance protects the school (or business) in case they're liable for bad events like these. If no insurance company would write you an insurance policy, that probably means the activity is so risky that it shouldn't take place.
I agree that politicians might give universities and other big businesses waivers and whatever the hell else they want, because, you know, politics. Doesn't mean it's right.

I could easily see the season either being cut short or cancelled entirely if things continue to go how they've been going the last couple weeks. We got lazy and we're seeing the second spike starting just in time for fall practice. Presidents are going to have to make very hard decisions if it comes to that.

I agree with AttackCoog, this will be a train wreck. Individual schools will pull out every week and that will cause a chain reaction.
Fresno, I don't know that Spring will be any better. The US has been a disaster from day one containing the virus. We are opening up without the ability to contain outbreaks. Absolutely insane.
Had we handled this correctly, we should be opening up in another month rather than lats month, and the number of cases should be dwindling rapidly. We are not New Zealand, and cannot isolate as well, but we could have created safe regions, many of them, and been at zero cases there, just like New Zealand. As a result, we are likely to have no college sports this year.
Each day that passes, I move a little more in the belief that we wont have any collegiate sports. There is no way to create a bubble like some of the pro sports can.

And they have waivers for those other things too.
These waivers are fine. They just need to give the athlete the option of sitting out while keeping their scholarship.

lol....yeah--I have to agree. Not a lot of love in DC right now. Frankly, I'd be very surprised if anything gets passed between now and November outside of some sort bill addressing an absolute pressing emergency.
