If MLB and NBA keep going without needing to stop, then it's more difficult for a single P5 team or conference to "break ranks" and cancel or curtail their season. Conversely, if MLB or NBA stop their season, then it's an easy decision for CFB programs to point to that and not start.

agree about seeing how the MLB, NBA, and NHL plans work out.

But, colleges have the added factor of the school itself having students on campus. If you can't have students, how can you have the student athletes? The other catch for colleges is the economic impact. No football could bankrupt a lot of athletic departments.

Shoot ... let's just cancel LIFE ITSELF.

It's the road we're essentially taking, as an ENTIRE freaking society.

Was talking to a college professor the other night and she brought up a good point: having students on campus is the rub. You can isolate and quarantine professional athletes, but with college athletes they have to attend class and will be exposed to thousands of people everyday. As a sports fan I did not like her comment, but it does have merit. I think we would be better off if the athletes were isolated from the rest of the student body

These colleges are going to do their best to get the season in if they have to play on line.

The entire world, or most of it, shut down.

Some are doing it again, Israel for instance.

Australia just walled Victoria province off from the rest of the nation.

So, it is not just our society. Its the planet.

Why not go with a 9 game conference schedule and spread those 9 games out over the 13 week season?

Front load the divisional games to increase the likelihood of be able to name divisional winners of the season has to be canceled midway.

Permit anyone who’s only schedules for 4 home conference games to play one OOC game at home so everyone gets 5 home dates.

Another alternative, especially if there are schools who don’t want to play at all is to completely deregulate. Let each school schedule whomever they can.

Mich, Mich St, Ohio St, Indiana, Purdue, and ND could probably do a round robin among themselves and fill the rest with MAC schools.

Only problem is that they'd have to play some games AT MAC schools

Bring it on! I'd welcome those games here at Peden Stadium with open arms. Multiple BIG games right here in Athens, OH, life would be great.

You might see some 10 or 11 game conference schedules.

What about a mid-October start time and play 6 conference games. Would six be feasible? I think I'm getting to the "grasping at straws" phase now.

Sure, for the 14 team schools, play a division round robin, division champions play in the CCG, 8 weeks (obviously one bye per round with an odd number of schools, so seven weeks to play six divisional games).

For a 12 team conference, they can play a division round robin in five weeks, CCG in week six.

So for each 14 team conference, each division just needs one school to declare that for reasons of local concern it cannot compete this years, start mid-october, play CCG at the scheduled time.

https://purdue.rivals.com/news/ten-game-...y-for-2020

Quote:This fact appears to be coming into focus: Non-conference games will be punted and the Big Ten appears headed to playing a 10-game, conference-games-only schedule.

“Yes, it hasn’t been officially decided,” said a Power 5 head coach. “We have a big meeting tomorrow (Thursday, July 9). But, yeah, it just seems to me that probably in the last week and a half, I could just kind of tell from the tone of our leadership that that's the direction that they want it to go and felt most comfortable going. Nothing has been decided. Nothing's official. But I would be surprised if it's not that.”

When could a decision be made on a move from a 12- to a 10-game schedule, with each Big Ten school jettisoning its three non-conference games?

“Probably in the next eight to 10 days,” said the source.

The 10 games probably would be played over 13-14 weeks.

“They're just trying to create flexibility if a team gets a bunch of cases and they can't play one week," said the source. "They want flexibility. Control and flexibility are key. Give yourself maybe two or three weeks of flexibility with 10 games over 13, 14 weeks. … that gives you flexibility to maneuver games around if a team can't play because they get too many cases.”
