WAC is a better baseball league and basketball is a push at worse.

WAC baseball is better - warmer climate helps, plus multiple programs that invest in the sport.

Basketball - will see if this year was an outlier, but both the Summit and the Big Sky were considerably better overall than the WAC.

But UNC isn't moving all sports to the Summit (at least not now)

There seems to be little reason to start their own football. The MVFC is the strongest conference in FCS. Why break up a good thing?

Yup. No reason to.

BUT UNC moving baseball to Summit is very logical - fans have actually heard of the Summit League teams/have had rivalries with them in the past, unlike the WAC where fellow affiliate Sac State is the only team that comes to Greeley in other sports.

Before North and South Dakota moved up, they were in the North Central Conference together. Now UND, USD, NDSU, SDSU and Nebraska-Omaha are all in the Summit. Augustana tried to get back in but got rejected. Morningside is NAIA now. The other two schools, St. Cloud St. and Minnesota St. are still in Division II.

The Summit FB Teams strength Comes by far from the NCC. All the weaker team.s come from the old Gateway. SDSU used to be the weakest team in the nCC, now there the 2nd strl test in the Gateway. SDSU has been consisteny coached for 25 years and finally has consistent home crowds. UNI is consisteny good, but they were in the. NCC for ,20 years.

Are they still coached by Hayden Fox?

No. He retired (or got cancelled). They should have moved up at the time-great name recognition! They were known as Mankato St. then.

Makes sense for both Northern Colorado baseball (travel improved) and the Summit, which is down to 5 baseball programs without Fort Wayne. Assuming St. Thomas gets approved, they'll be up to 7 by then. ...

Any word on the progress on St. Thomas getting approved? If the Summit adds St. Thomas, that brings them up to 7 in soccer, and then Eastern Illinois might be available to the MAC to bring them back up to six.

Legislation didn’t pass, but an NCAA statement invited St. Thomas and the Summit League to use the waiver process.

It's not that it didn't pass, it just has to pass through yet another layer of bureaucracy.

As for UNCo to the Summit full time, no. Denver doesn't want them around and Denver's a better all-around fit for the conference. The NCC could have traded UNCo to the RMAC for Kearney or Chadron and been perfectly fine. They were always a strange fit for the NCC and they work well enough as a Big Sky school.

RE: Northern Colorado moves from the WAC to the Summit in baseball
NoCo is not changing conferences. It's just they have two sports, Baseball and Women's Swimming (also in the WAC) that are not sponsored by the Big Sky. The Summit was probably willing to give NoCo a better financial package for Baseball than the WAC because they needed the team more. The WAC will still have 9 Baseball teams in Spring 2022 when NoCo leaves and Chicago State dropping the sport (there wont be a 2021 season), wile Dixie State and Tarleton State are joining. Swimming will probably stay put in the WAC as it's just a one day meet.

This sort of free agent signing of orphaned sports is common, as everyone tries to keep at auto-bid size. And it's sort of a gentleman's agreement where everyone tries to help everyone else out, and be close to the minimum, for these less popular sports -- everyone wants there to be as many competitors as possible in these lesser sports, not a war between conferences.
