Yup the nfl has already cancelled a preseason game and some fcs games have already been canceled. It wont be long until conference games are cancelled. People are foolish if they believe college football is going to happen this year.

Yup. This rise in Texas cases will take at least a month to get under control given that we are unlikely to return to a full shutdown. A full shutdown would probably get things under control in a couple of weeks. Bending the curve with no shutdown (other than bars) means we are just using masks and distancing to retard infections in Texas. I suspect that method will work, but it might take a month (or more) to get where we want to be.

Most effective way would be to just get everyone under 65 infected and get herd immunity. Let’s be the guinea pig state.

I agree! Plus the more a virus infects people the more it will mutate and get less deadly.

That takes time too---and Im not sure how you stop 65+ from having any interaction with the under 65 population. I think where we are now is probably the best way forward for the time being. We will eventually get to some sort of herd immunity the way we are going---but its going to take a while---and thats actually part of the strategy as it keeps the health care system from ever getting overwhelmed. When the healthcare system gets overwhelmed is where you get into excess deaths (people who would have survived if they could have received treatment). I dont think a vaccine is going to get here quick enough to save us from this initial round against Covid19---but I do think it will be part of the long term management of Covid-19 (just like annual flu shots). Covid has broken out and will never be contained.
Its going to be around for a long time so we have to learn to manage it.

Frankly, I think we are around the halfway point in a year long process toward getting some sort of effective control due to herd immunity. Once we are there---some sense of normality can return to life.

Don't get the second part. Hasn't football already started? I know ECU is in workouts already.

Workouts don’t mean anything if games start getting cancelled. They have already cancelled quite a few fcs vs fbs games.

You do realize that a % of those "under 65" folks aren't going to survive to gain "herd immunity", right? How many deaths would you say are acceptable?

He clearly didn't put much thought into that post. Having a sudden mass influx of cases would overwhelm our already stressed healthcare system which would drive up death rates and dry up medical supplies greatly exacerbating the situation. While I dont support going back into full shut down mode, we have to be smart and selective in which industries we reopen. Sports is big business but it's just entertainment. It isn't essential and that makes it pretty low priority.

Folks, the cat is out of the bag. You can't put it back in. We are all going to get sick. The moment mass protests happened is the moment that the virus era of 2020 truly ended.

Those protests were beyond stupid. That said, opening bars wasnt too bright either. I never saw how social distancing was going to work in a population of drunk people looking to hook-up.

If that’s the only symptoms you’ve had then I’m almost positive I had it back in March. I had the exact symptoms except I had a high fever too. I still went to work but 3 days later I felt pretty good again.

Not necessarily. The 1918 pandemic began as a fairly mild flu that spread around the world, then mutated into a deadly form that killed millions.

On a different point, the quickest route to herd immunity might save lives in the long run. Just rip the band-aid off, get it over with. For herd immunity to be effective we would likely need about 70% infected, vaccinated or dead.

Well in the case of the spanish flu the opposite happened because it didn’t start out deadly. I should clarify the mutation would only apply to virus that start deadly.
