It's my sister in law who now lives in Woodstock.

how we are "systemically racist." She then asked what I thought about that.
I gave her the F-bomb and my wife intervened at that point.
You can't even have a pleasant, casual conversation with these people.
Once they find out that you don't totally agree with them, then you are ignorant and
shouldn't be allowed to exist.

My boys live in Arlington and they do not reveal their philosophies to anyone.

Exactly, if you disagree, you are stupid, so much for the folks that in my youth were touting tolerance. At a beach vacation my brother in law announced (I was not present) that since we live in the Richmond area we are racist???

Will point out that this thread is full of people accusing those that disagree with them of being full of "hate and intolerance" and "ignorant." So I'm not sure that behavior is limited to one particular side...

If we erase too many names, we might lose our status as

Alma Mater of the Nation.

But I won't give up my license plate bracket.

It's the current phrase du jour to convince its audience that the above statement is true. The more you hear someone bemoaning the prevalence of "Cancel Culture", the more likely it is they're selling you something.

Boogeyman status? Selling something? How many more monuments have to be defaced, removed or destroyed by mobs before “cancel culture” is more than some phantom threat? Have you driven down Monument Avenue in Richmond lately? Little Italy in Baltimore?

This coming from someone on the frontline advocating the canceling out of our Tribe nickname. You changed your own handle - and coincidently at the same time, the board supervisor “stopped by” to see if we wanted to cancel out our own board name.

I think discussion is great but let’s not pretend that cancel culture is a fantasy concern. It’s not only real, we are living with the attacks here on our own campus daily.

I had to contact the admin in order to get the name change. It's not something that can be done by a user. gts said in his reply to me that there had been a few requesting that, so it makes sense that he came by to check on the board.

You say "advocating the canceling out of our Tribe nickname", but it's significantly less sinister. I advocate examining whether it's appropriate, and my opinion is that I think a nickname is meaningless enough that it's better to change than have anything remotely questionable.

"Cancel Culture" and "attacks" are examples of aggressive language that makes it easier to characterize this as strictly conflict and establish us vs. them rather than a discussion. This is exactly what I meant by "boogeyman status".

Kansas City Chiefs keeping their name, banning American Indian headdresses and facepaint at their stadium.

A response from an American Indian Chiefs fan:

This is the sort of thing I'd like to see William & Mary do publicly, rather than (maybe) quietly behind the scenes.

RE: Current Affairs
the Washington DC mayor's group recommended a bunch of name changes, but will highlight some that are also featured on campus:

James Monroe
Thomas Jefferson
John Tyler

I hope these names stay prominently placed on our campus.

I am not opposed to this (seems fine) but I don't think it actually accomplishes anything of value.

Imagine if people everywhere (globally) gave a list of who had the land before them?

What's the issue with that? Seems like it would historically interesting.

Israelis and Palestinians would go to their graves defending or rejecting the results. Can you imagine?

Could take hours in some locations... lol

I do agree it would be interesting.
