The design guidelines/principle statements for renaming
Ugh. Utter nonsense. Just leave the building and street names alone. Keep the statutes where they are. Don't waste time fighting the Civil War all over again. The College must devote all its energy to solving the very real economic, health and demographic problems it faces. Many colleges and universities will perish in the coming years. We can't be one of them.

Seems like an extremely measured, reasonable, and carefully thought out process. Forgive me for not being terribly worried that WM is going to suffer because we renamed Millington hall or something.

Yeah, reading between the lines I got the sense that people like Jefferson and Monroe were going to stay, but some of the other halls were more likely to change.

Millington must have been a really bad guy for them to raze his building.
I guess they may have to consider razing Ewell Hall and a couple others.

This was also my takeaway

The Orientation Aides this weekend are wearing shirts with
"Welcome to the Tribe" on the back.
Maybe there is still hope.
Or maybe the shirts were printed months before the unrest this summer.
Too bad the incoming freshmen had to experience the monsoon this week
and the campus swamp now.
It's a muddy mess with roof repairs at Wren, renovation at Washington Hall and
some ongoing sidewalk replacement around the Sunken Gardens.

Reminds me of my freshman year in 1975. It rained every day the first week. Broke two umbrellas.
Also, although I am too lazy to look it up right now, there is a picture in the Colonial Echo of the next school year (76-77, I think) that shows the pavement between Crim Dell and the woods to be totally underwater. A bicyclist is trying, with difficulty, to navigate through it. (Students now probably don't even know what the Colonial Echo is, showing how far down yearbooks have come).
So, yeah, it does tend to rain in Williamsburg.

In October, 1971, by my memory, it rained 25 of 31 days. I learned to keep a folded up, hooded rain pullover in the hip pocket of my jeans. Welcome to Williamsburg!

Sorry to see that. The Wmbg monument didn't honor slavery. It honored the everyday soldiers who fought and died not defending slavery but rather protecting their farms and homes. Besides, whitewashing history is something totalitarian governments do.

Absolutely correct TribeFan 1983.
Nothing offensive about that little monument.
Nothing but pure history with no propaganda.
With kids knowing so little about history, having a small piece of rock
in a park might inspire students to check out historic events.

And there was nothing wrong about defending your little farm,
any your two pigs and a cow. That's what my family did.

RE: Tribe & Current Affairs
Just curious what about the little farms needed "defending"? Were the farms being seized by the US Government and hence needed "defending"?
If there was a battle occurring on the farm, I can understand "defending" it from both the US Government AND the Confederacy, hence no need to join one side.
Also, I'd think the double Confederate Flags may be a construed by some (many?) as being "offensive about that little monument".
The article says it was moved to Bicentennial Park in 2000 but was originally dedicated in 1908. I wonder where it was located for the first 92 years - possibly a more appropriate place. I'm no fan of the cancel culture either but think locations for monuments and artifacts such as these are best located where individuals can "pull" the information (such as Battlefields, museums, etc.) and less where it is in a "push" scenario (public areas where those who do not wish to be presented with this part of history still have to consume it).

Monument was originally at Courthouse of 1776 then moved for a short time to Cedar Grove cemetery then moved to courthouse by old Williamsburg lodge. When parking lot was put in on site by New Williamsburg Lodge it was moved to Bicentennial Park. So this is fifth move probably going to Williamsburg Battlefield site when money is raised.

Thanks - that's a lot of relocation.

RE: Tribe & Current Affairs
1693,
Keep in mind the northern army did indeed destroy the farms and communities as
they marched southward. They adopted a "total war" strategy," which included
making war on the civilians. Anything of use would be taken from a farm:
crops taken or burned, livestock taken or killed.
Virginians were on the defense and not the offense, until Lee moved toward
Gettysburg.
I'm not defending the southern political and economic elite who were calling the shots when it came to slavery and war. I will defend all of the common folks who were drawn into this conflict but had no real interest in fighting a war for some rich slaveholder who lived on the other side of the county.
The Williamsburg monument was a modest recognition of these common folk.
My wife and I walked by it for years without ever noticing that it was a Civil War monument.
