RE: CAA Men’s Basketball Preview

A lot to take away from this.

1) When can we expect to see Fredericks? If he’s a grad transfer I would hope he could be plugged into the rotation immediately but it will be hard if he’s missing practice. I’m sure Coach B has a plan.

2) Christmas slimmed down a bit as a lot of posters posting about after last season

3) Can’t remember which poster it was, but someone was saying how underrated wing span size is, particularly in “positionless” basketball

Nate Darling (Delaware) is staying in the NBA Draft. Delaware lost Mutts and Darling so Caa is pretty wide open.

RE: CAA Men’s Basketball Preview
Not necessarily CAA BB specific, but I was listening to "Titus and Tate Podcast" over the weekend and Mark Titus had an interesting idea for the college basketball "season." Creating a bubble for each of the 32 conferences and playing only conference games over the course of 8 weeks. Players might be doing most of the coursework online anyway, so that wouldn't change. Based on what we have seen from the NBA and MLS, bubbles seem to work; moving around the country MLB style, not so much. The winner of the mini-season would be the conference champion and move on to a bubble NCAA tournament. They proposed it in Maui, and I wouldn't mind "working from home" on the islands 04-cheers

One issue though would be how many games are played. For example, the CAA has 10 teams; ACC has 15. Do the CAA/ACC have each team play every other team once? That's 9 games for CAA and 14 for ACC. Do they try to play 14 or 16 games in the bubble season (2 games a week with/without a bye)? Another would be the cost of testing, health and safety measures, etc. As they pointed out, the SWAC and the SEC have different finances; would the NCAA be putting up this money with the purpose of making it back on the Tournament?

There are of course other issues, but it seems like a decent proposal and starting point.

Hopefully by late October, there will be a much better handle on which vaccines will be ready, for which targeted groups, and most importantly the "when" available. I think that delivery availability date will be critical in terms of what decisions are to be made about winter sports. The fall sports know nothing will be available at the start or likely even midway through their respective seasons. Winter sports at least has some hope that global distribution of vaccines could be in play. Whether that means no pre-conference games and starting conference-only in January or pre-conference will take place in some form in Nov. and/or Dec. depends (IMO) heavily on that vaccination forecast.

Certainly, if it looks like vaccines won't be available until say March, then ideas like bubble locations will have to be taken into consideration if they want to push forward. The NCAA will be keen to do everything it can to have March Madness in 2021 after missing out in 2020 (and the $$$ that goes along with it).

Am I the only one extremely skeptical of a vaccine (that actually works, and can be widely distributed) being ready by the end of next spring much less this fall/winter? Bubbles are the only way to ensure you have the best case scenario for a sports league, and a version of this for college basketball could easily work to include pre conference "bubbles" aka tourneys like they have now. MLB is a mess, NFL will be interesting to see try to function, and very pessimistic on NCAA Football this fall.

no, you're not the only one. Wait until a vaccine is available; you'll have one crowd trying to hoard it like toilet paper, demanding to get access to it, etc... and the other crowd saying no way i'm taking that new vaccine yet until more testing is done. We're not even there yet and the frenzy that comes once we do get it will get interesting.

I promise you come 10/15 (pre-election) we'll be hearing we have a vaccine ready. Then come 11/15 we'll realize we still have a ways to go. Just a guess.....

RE: CAA Men’s Basketball Preview
I didn't where else to put this, so I'll just put it in here. The Athletic recently posted an article about how to have CBB non-conference games in a bubble atmosphere (there were 44 total bubble locations as they were trying to have 8 or 9 teams per bubble). Harrisonburg was on one of three proposed Mid-Atlantic locations, along with Richmond and DC, and honestly I would love to see JMU host these schools for a non conference slate. Below is text from the article (https://theathletic.com/1980558/2020/08/...ronavirus/) and the italics are my notations:

Site: Harrisonburg, Va.
Arena: Atlantic Union Bank Center
Teams: James Madison, Marshall, Radford, Virginia, VCU (trade them for Longwood or ECU to keep them in Richmond?), VMI, Virginia Tech, West Virginia
Quick take: James Madison is scheduled to open its new arena, the Atlantic Union Bank Center, in time for the 2020-21 season. Well, hey, let’s put that baby to use! Harrisonburg just so happens to be a solid meeting point for a couple of the more far-flung teams in this region: West Virginia and Marshall. Morgantown isn’t that much farther from D.C. than Harrisonburg, but the difference is significant for Marshall; by heading out off I-81, Virginia, Virginia Tech and VCU all have minimal drives, and the Herd don’t have to thunder their way for seven hours before they get to the capital.

Site: Richmond, Va.
Arena: Siegel Center
Teams: ECU, Hampton, Longwood, Maryland Eastern Shore, Navy, Norfolk State, Old Dominion, William and Mary

Site: Washington, D.C. A
Arena: Capital One Arena
Teams: American, Delaware, Delaware State, Georgetown, Howard, Liberty (trade them for Navy or UMES to have them closer to home in Richmond?), Maryland, Richmond (trade them for Navy or UMES to keep them in Richmond?)

Site: Washington, D.C. B
Arena: Charles E. Smith Center
Teams: Coppin State, George Mason, George Washington, Loyola Md., UMBC, Morgan State, Mount St. Mary’s, Towson

Interesting development- Zack Martin a guard who transferred away from Towson a couple of years ago to New Mexico is transferring back as a grad transfer- I think he’ll play this season and should help make them a factor in the conference.

Didn’t JMU in the Lefty years have a player who transferred from JMU and then back?

William Davis, although I don't think he ever played a game for anyone else. He just had to sit out a year in the middle of his career.

Yep, Willie D. He transferred to New Orleans the year after JMU lost to them in the NIT. Made you wonder if there was tampering by their coaches, but pre internet instant info sharing Back then it was much easier to keep a secret in the seedy side of hoops recruiting.
I never heard the real story why he transferred, didn’t play there, then transferred back to JMU. He was from DC and had no connection to New Orleans that I was aware of.

He sat out his original Junior year and worked at Taco Bell on market street. True story.
With the exception of butterfingers from time to time, his offensive game was dynamite and he could electrify the zoo.

Maybe he liked jazz and Cajun food?

He played on my team the year he had to sit out for one of the tournaments JMU had for students. It was not intramurals, just a tournament.

Dalton Jefferson will not play this season. Mettlen tweeted he has battled injuries since joining the team last season.

I believe he was Lefty's first recruit - at least out of high school. Greatest smile...

A preferred walk-on who never played last year. I’m sure he’s disappointed, as are his family and friends in the area. He was a star at East Rockingham High School. If his health allows perhaps he can transfer down to a DII, or even a DIII like Bridgewater College and star again. His leaving the team does answer the question about how HC MB will make room for some of the new local talent being recruited.
