COVID-19 football cancellations/postponements
We've got two so far: Florida A&M at Southern, and Jackson State vs. Tennessee State in Memphis

Also, the NAIA won't allow its members to start the football season until Sept. 12, so that wipes out four games against FCS opponents.

And a third: Southern vs Tennessee St in Detroit.

Southern and Tennessee St's first 2 weeks are cancelled, as well as a game apiece for Jackson St (TSU) and FAMU (SU).

My initial guess has been that the first 0-2 games of various D1 teams would be cancelled if for no other reason than uncertainty delaying commitment to go forward with the season.

Why would Southern play Tennessee State in Detroit? What's the appeal of flying up to a dead city to play a game?

Because it was the revival of the Detroit Football Classic that lasted from 2003 through 2007. The games averaged over 40,000 per contest including over 50,000 for the first one between Alabama State and FAMU. The game had already had strong ticket sales for this year's contest which was scheduled to be the first HBCU football game in Detroit since 2007. Detroit is also a huge HBCU alumni city so any game up there draws well and schools use it to recruit local kids.

Detroit has a real nice downtown now — I’ve stayed there for MAC title games. They’ve revitalized it in the past 10 years. Most people come away pleasantly surprised.

HBCU schools try to branch out and throw a bone to high-HBCU alum cities like Detroit and Chicago. Anecdotally, I know some folks whose exposure to Clark Atlanta was when they played Soldier Field and they ended up attending there.

Indiana Black Expo has been doing this for decades.

It's been reported that LSU has 30 players under quarantine (although none are allegedly hospitalized).

Indeed, not all are known to be infected ... reportedly a stretch of nightclubs near campus known as Tigerland was the location of a recent outbreak, so some of the quarantines are contact quarantines rather than players testing positive.

RE: COVID-19 football cancellations/postponements
It’s somewhat surprising that the P5 commissioners aren’t more visible in advocating for more COVID testing and possibly creation of “bubbles” to help slow the spread of the virus amongst athletes.

Seems pretty obvious now that frequent testing is essential to identifying who has the virus. Also, many individuals who have the virus and are actively spreading the virus...are not symptomatic (therefore, it’s naive to strictly rely on common physical symptoms such as body temperature or coughing). Some schools are indicating that they will screen athletes at least weekly in order to promote the safety of players. Other schools are foolishly bringing back athletes without any plans for virus screening.

Similarly, the use of “bubbles” seems to be working in other sports to mitigate the spread. If schools are serious about playing this fall, leaders need to communicate some plans and reasonable expectations.
