wait, I thought we rent the paid off Liberty Bowl...meaning we pay our part of the deal.

moreover, all single game Tiger tickets have a 1 dollar facility maintenance fee attached.

on the flip side Tulsa has an NBA ready arena that just sits there.

Apparently the rent should be higher since the city is losing money on it. That might have effected your ability to afford those nice upgrades though. That's the point I was making.

As for the BOK... yeah we have a nice arena sitting there that we occasionally rent out... just like Wichita does. It wasn't built for us.... and it makes money without the city subsidizing it.

I lived in Memphis for 4 years and didn't realize how close LBS and UM were. I don't know why you would need a closer stadium.

Because the Liberty Bowl isn't the best stadium anymore, and in 10-15 years, it's considered a "dump." It is a historic stadium, home of many professional teams, amazing college football games in history. Also, the Liberty Bowl is one of the most historic bowl games. However, they have renovated the home locker, scoreboard, and speakers. Other than the pressbox and suites, not much more you can renovate. What I'm trying to say is this, the University of Memphis needs to donate as much money for a new stadium as they possibly can so they can have a new stadium in 2035-2040, then sit there and do nothing then realize they have no money to build a stadium in 2035-40 because they haven't done anything.

a lot of that has to do with mismanagement by Spectra and a bad contract the city signed in 2011 but it is what it is. Only thing left at the Liberty Bowl that really needs work is the Press Box. The Sky Boxes could use some work too.

Yes indeed!. Not just football either. The campus has evolved so much since I graduated in 2013.

And really a lot since 1969, for me, lol.

Yeah since 81 for me. I wonder if Jeb has any aerial shots of the campus between 73 and 81. I spent most of my time in the Art Annex building. It was a little one story southeast from the University Center. They added new buildings there so it got nuked.

Sold many a Coca-Cola in glass bottles there starting when I was a 10 year old kid in the mid 50's. Was there as a fan for the historic '63 game with the rebels/black bears/landsharks that ended in a 0-0 tie. One of the highlights of that game for me was seeing John "Bull" Bramlett, (a fellow Humes High alumnus) get an offside penalty by getting a running head start before the snap and absolutely killing the Ole Miss center. Twice in a row.

DAAANNNNGGG!!!! Look at that bigass fresh parking lot next to the Admin building where the quadrangle and the UofM fountain is now!
For those of you who don't know, sometime in the 90s, the campus went all pedestrian (for all intents and purposes), and cut out most all of the streets through campus.

that's why we have the 3 outdoor fields...duh! lol

one of the outdoor fields is turf and I wish we had the money to put a pavilion over it like UAB.

that way we would have the IPF, a covered turf field, and 2 uncovered grass fields.

Dang! UAB might be ready for the AAC soon!

when a new stadium comes around it will because LBS just gets too old & the city will want to be out of the stadium upkeep business. at that point the football program and university should be in a good enough position to financially pull off that move

I've always said, we need a special deal with Southern RR (or L&N, or whoever it is these days) to run special tiger trollys on the tracks on gameday from the dorms. That would replace the stigma of not being on-campus with something really unique and cool.

Just think... the students could all come down to the tracks with a stick and a red bandanna tied to the end like a bunch of hobos.... Never mind. Stupid idea...

Thanks for the pic.

I actually have a few scattered memories of my first Tiger football game at Crump, in 1952. At night. Bright lights. All men in attendance. Cold. All wore suits, ties, topcoats, and hats. Everyone seemed tall (at least to me).

RE: Memphis IPF.
i have memories of being at Crump as a very small child, probably the 1964 season. Its funny that if some had gotten their way and Crump had been expanded instead of Memorial Stadium (aka the Liberty Bowl) being built & opened in 1965, most likely a new stadium would have been built in the 70's and the NFL would have placed a team here. that would have pretty much crushed MSU football. old Crump was finally torn down in 2006 by the city/memphis city schools (it was on school property adjacent to Central High School) and replaced with a new high school appropriate stadium. I went over and took these as it was demolished

the locker rooms were accessed by going down these stairs, walking under the track & coming back up under the stands. I have documented 2 times that a Memphis State player was knocked over the bench and down those stairs

Probably attended my first Tiger game at Crump in 1956. Saw most all of the Tiger games thereafter at Crump including our first SEC win over Miss. St. thanks to the Tiger Cub program that got kids 12 & under in for $5 for the entire season. It was a great program to build young fan support. And I bought season tickets while a HS soph to be able to get decent seats to the 1st game at the sold out Liberty Bowl versus Ole Miss in 1965 where I recall we led 7-0 at half only too lose when OM inserted a young soph QB named Archie Manning.

correction - the 1st win over an SEC team WAS against Miss St (28-7 in 1962) but that game was in Starkville and was topped off with a huge fight between the fans when Memphis students tried to take a goal post. The team made it back to the locker room where they watched the fight from the windows

Memphis followed up by winning in 1963 at Crump 17-10 (the Russ Volmer knocked down the stairs game) and legend has it that when the game ended with the Bulldogs defeated, Miss St radio legend Jack Cristil punched a hole in the wall of the press box area he was in.

I was at the Miss. State game in Starkville in 1962, when we got our first SEC win. I was sitting with my uncle, who was a Miss St. alum, smack in the middle of the Miss State home section.

I yelled the entire game for Memphis State, of course. My uncle kidded me for years that he saved my life that day by helping me get out of there alive.

The logical location for the OCS would be between the red-lined main campus & the yellow-lined south campus. It would serve to unite the campuses & provide substantial commercial redevelopment potential along Park Ave from Audubon Park west to Highland. Hopefully the city & our university could work this in a synergistic manner where the university would own & maintain the stadium area between the campuses and the city would benefit from the private commercial redevelopment along Park Ave.
