Well, you all will at least have one big advocate in Marshall.

Howard Schnellenberger arrived at Miami in 1979. The year before there was a vote on to drop Miami football that fell short by 1 vote 5-4. Miami got lucky with back to back hires Schnellenberger and Johnson.

Most if not all of Miami's "Glory Days" came in the 9 year period of Schnellenberger and Johnson from 1979-1988. What most people skip over or don't realize is Jimmy Johnson was only in Coral Gables 4 years. And 2 of the next 3 championships are almost a direct result of Jimmy Johnson's recruiting. Dennis Erickson was just along for the ride, I mean Stevie Wonder could have coached the 89 and 91 teams.

Also in the early to mid 90s every school if it be IA/IAA/DII or what ever started to realize recruiting Florida was a good thing and then what they realized is not all kids in Florida want to stay and play in Florida. Before that the big 3 of Miami, Florida and Florida State fought over the best players in the state with a few other schools trying to recruit there but it wasn't anything like today.

It's going to be slow for me at work the next few days so I decided to take a stab at putting this together. The idea is to use the performance of each team from the CUSA & Sun Belt over the past 10 years to put together the best possible conference between the two. For Football I used ESPN's FPI from 2011 to 2020, for basketball I used KenPom over the same period, and then RPI was pulled from Warren Nolan from 2010 to 2019. Then I took the median of the results and ranked them all.

Once I had compiled everything I added a weight to it so that the focus would be on football (3/6), then basketball (2/6) and have a little emphasis on baseball (1/6). The schools are listed in order of their rankings based on this idea.

1) La Tech
2) Louisiana
3) Marshall
4) Middle
5) So Miss
6) WKU
7) Ark State
8) Ga Southern
9) UAB
10) App State
11) Rice
12) FAU

13) UT Arlington
14) ODU

This 12 team conference would result in an average FPI of 87, an average KenPom of 179, and an average RPI of 103.

I thought a 12 team conference would work the cleanest, but then I saw how highly UTA finished and wanted to work on a configuration to ensure that they were included. So if this conference is opened up to non-football then you add UTA and then ODU I guess to balance it out.

Click the attachment for detailed rankings

Swap ODU, UTA, Rice, GA Southern for Troy, North Texas, FIU, and South Alabama.

I'd swap ODU and UTA for Troy and North Texas, keeping Rice and GA Southern. If Rice has an issue with the conference, let 'em go, and grab South Alabama to replace 'em.

Marshall’s glaring flaw is that they tend to look inward first which can seriously cripple efforts to find the BEST coach, not necessarily the one who makes the smoothest transition or is a Son of Marshall. In general, Hamrick made good hires with Doc and Dan, but there have been disasters n the past.

Hamrick def has more hits than misses on hiring at Marshall:

Doc Holliday- Football
Dan D'Antoni- M. Basketball
Matt Daniel- W. Basketball
Chris Grassie- M. Soccer
Matt Grobe- M. Golf
Ari Aganus- Volleyball
Megan Smith- Softball

In a few years we will find out if the last head coaching hire was good or not with Michael Swan for W Soccer. I really wanted Luke Duffy at Concord though. Grassie came from the same conference. In the last 3 years Duffy and Concord have only lost 7 games.

Who I wanted to take over for Doc is no longer an option, that was Phil Ratliff who passed away in 2015 at 44. And for D'Antoni my 1st choice would be AW Hamilton. Im not one that believes you have to hire someone that went to Marshall but I believe Ratliff and Hamilton would or will have been the best realistic option.

Dennis totally changed that offense, he went to a single back set. He won two championships in his own right. Very undervalued in Miami history. Jimmy lost a national championship that he had no business losing, the 86 Fiesta Bowl. Dennis only Miami coach to win 2 NC's.

Right . . . we're much worse than UTEP, Rice, FIU, or several other schools in the conference that have rarely even had a winning season in C-USA and aren't firing coaches after a year. Your bias is large and obvious, bordering on obsessive. In fact, WKU kept Sanford too long, and were not nearly as quick as USM was when firing Johnson. Hopson has been given a "Win the West or your gone" this year. We'll see what he does.

The last time I checked the teams mentioned in this topic UTEP and FIU wasnt in them and as far as Rice their problems are a lot different than everyone else.

Boy Idiot took Western to a bowl his first season. So while I wouldnt mind him gone after that season since Western was projected to Win CUSA and one of five schools to compete for a NYD bowl. No AD in the country was pulling the trigger.

Yes S. Miss fired Johnson after one season but on their next hire they drop down for a FCS coach that was talented as a DC. This meant a complete change of directions because S. Miss changed from a offensive head coach to defensive. Instead of going outside the box on the hire they went bargain hunting.

Then S. Miss had the chance to get one of the best offensive minded coaches in FBS for another bargain. The leadership went PC and was afraid to take a little bad press. Now S. Miss is in year 5 of a bad hire and cant pull the trigger because of bad leadership or they dont have the funds for a buyout and then a new hire in the 800k to 1 million range.

Lets not talk about S. Miss's basketball hires because while the football program has road the average train...9 out of the last 13 years...six of them 1 game above .500 and three below .500. That spans 5 head coaches...two 8 wins seasons, one 9 and one 12

Well S. Miss dropped from the bargain bin all the way down to the 90% off sale for your last basketball coach. When you have a head basketball coach leaving to become the asst coach of Nebraska . Nothing else really needs said.

Speaking of Nebraska didnt S. Miss have to sell their home game back to Nebraska for 1 million dollars to buy out Ellis Johnson? So S.Miss played at Nebraska twice and got 1 million total.

Middle has been one of the top winning programs in CUSA I didnt put them in the group with S. Miss because I hate them. I didnt put S. Miss with Middle because I hate S. Miss. I dont hate either school but both schools have piss poor leadership and it shows. It shows that Middle will be OK with avg for long periods of years as long as they have that one good season. It shows S. Miss can not over come money problems to make good hires. Or to buyout bad hires.

Tech and Western is in the same boat as S. Miss when it comes to budgets. Yet both schools finds ways to overcome that problem. Not only overcome it but to compete at the top of the conference they are in.

So much wrong in the above (like Monken, the OC from OK ST, as the next hire after Johnson and "The two schools that I would rank at the bottom" with no qualifier doesn't count MANY schools in the conference?), but I've finally realized your not worth wasting more time on. Everyone who reads your posts can see the bias. Don't know why it's there and don't care either.

That would have been the 1987 Fiesta Bowl: #2 Penn St 14 #1 Miami 10. Miami may have had the better offense but as they say defense wins championships.

If memory serves me correct Miami had 7 turnovers in that game including 5 INTs from Testaverde. Penn State was out gained by over 250 yards but the Penn St defense was opportunistic and timely in their dominance and forced turnovers. For the most part of the game they made Miami play in between the 30s.

That Johnson staff was loaded to with Butch Davis, Chuck Pagano, Tommy Tubberville and Dave Wannstedt.

The old "Everyone who reads your posts can see", that pathetic. Do you honestly think I care what any other person on this board thinks? I dont say things for anyone's benefit but my own and call it like I see it.

The funny thing is I bet I could go through your post and find post that agreed with basically what I said....the leadership at S. Miss has shown for years that they make awful decisions. One of if not the worse in CUSA.

If not for playing in the west and some how having Tech's number in FB. It would be even worse.....

lets straighten out something else, in 2015 S. Miss was not competing for a CUSA championship. S. Miss might have won the west division (Tech choked it away) but never was competing for the championship. The championship never was in doubt...men vs little boys.

You're pathetic and this will be my last reply. The part I was correcting was, "Yes S. Miss fired Johnson after one season but on their next hire they drop down for a FCS coach that was talented as a DC." The next hire was Monken, a high level FBS OC. I agree we should have hired Briles as OC last year, our President got scared off by the PC group. The rest of your post is the normal rubbish. You are incapable of ever admitting you are wrong, and you often are.

The OC was Art Briles and S. Miss wouldnt pull the trigger and left the coach hanging out to dry. Just another example of after hiring a bargain basement FCS coach...a defensive coach. S. Miss leadership was afraid to go outside the box and hire someone to fix the offense. You call it bias all I see is facts. Stop trying to fool yourself, you care, or you wouldnt responded. So point something out in the post you quoted that was not true? That's the real reason you put "I dont care"

Says “Don’t care” Then replies with personal insult

Southern Miss has had two really good bowl game opponents Washington and Florida State, and laid an egg against both.

Jimmy lost a national championship that he had no business losing, the 86 Fiesta Bowl. Dennis only Miami coach to win 2 NC's.

86 season. It was a horrible game...over confident, the army camo fatigues game. Jimmy allowed that to happen and the pedofile of penn state won. That could have been considered one of the best teams of all time had they won.

I think this is actually pretty good data.

You should take out two of ULL years when they cheated and had to vacate their wins and bowl win

ULL cheated from 2011-2014 and had to vacate 22 wins and the Sun Belt title in 2013

That should be removed from the data.

How am I not shocked that unbiased data used with 2 different formulas still has the Cajuns in the top 12. I didn’t see any Cajun fans clamoring about how great we are, or begging to get into some league like this. But I’m pretty sure everyone that reads this knew a LaTech fan would gripe about Louisiana. Go figure.

3 of Lafayette’s best years were when they cheated and had to vacate those wins. Those years shouldn’t be considered.

Like Tommy said if Lafayette wants to move up to CUSA it is going to have to pay price like everyone in CUSA. Of course Lafayette wants to merge with a better more prestigious conference
