OT (sort of): Status of COVID-19
Just saw this graph on Yahoo news - deaths by cause, Feb-May 2020:

COVID-19 is 3rd, and regular Influenza/pneumonia is 7th.

Definitely getting the feeling it's slowed down for the Summer; remains to be seen if it comes back in the Fall, and if so, how bad it will be.

Keep in mind that those deaths have occurred over, what, a three month time period, maybe four? Also note that since mid-march, the country has enacted loose quarantine measures to try to slow-down the spread of the disease. Not exactly an apples to apples comparison to those other diseases.

"A “rescue drug” that could stop the progression of the COVID-19 virus in people who are infected is expected to be sent to a UNC lab for testing next week. Subject to a vastly accelerated schedule, if it works it could be ready for application in the fall............

What will really relieve the stress in our country,” he said, “is what we call a rescue drug. A drug that if you knew was available, you went into a doctor coughing, like you might do for pneumonia, and he said, ‘I’m going to give you a shot that’s going to wipe this out.’ That will relieve all the stress in the United States."

On the one hand, I hope they come up with something like that soon.

On the other hand, the way they are rushing this stuff through, I don't think I'd want to be among the first to try it - unless I was dying anyway.

Man, this STINKS!

I had been thinking the exact same thing

Speaking of Covid-19... remember when we had social distancing?

If these cities have manageable spikes in 1-2 weeks....maybe we open everything up.

The extreme rioting and looting is a direct result of too many people out of work with nothing to do.

Hadn't thought about that, but it's probably a contributing factor for sure.

We can only hope.

Pathetic political response to a crisis.
The Raleigh police Chief was quoted yesterday as saying that she wouldn't put her officers in harms way to protect someone's personal property. I wonder if the citizens of Raleigh should refuse to pay their taxes since they are not getting any value from the Police Department?
Every rock/bottle thrower and looter should be jailed. Protesting is good, allowing rioting just deepens the divide, which may be the political agenda in the first place.

FWIW, Pitt has three different teams working on three very different C-19 vaccines. One would deliver the system in a very unorthodox way - micro-needles. Another one would be more of an RNA approach.

That one is not going to be one of the first to the market but will instead posture for the second wave of vaccines so that it can quickly clean up any of the side effects from the first wave.

We will figure this out because there’s just too many brilliant people working on and too much money being thrown at it for it to go any other way.

RE: OT (sort of): Status of COVID-19
Governor Cuomo announced today that NYS now has the lowest new infection rate in the nation. We went from, at one point, almost 900 deaths per day to just 46 yesterday, and 54 the day before. It was really scary back in March and April, with everyone looking at and treating each other as if they had the Corona.
The shelter in place worked well for NY. The masks and social distancing has and is still working well for us. We just opened up stage 3 today which allows us to now be able to eat in restaurants with 50% of capacity or less.

People are putting a lot of hope on a miracle drug. The truth is we have had almost zero success combating viruses. If we find them out in the open we can kill them with disinfectants. Most viruses don't survive very long without a host anyway. Once the virus is in the body it is a whole other battle. Flu vaccines don't prevent you from getting the flu. They mitigate the effects of the flu by training your body to fight it.
