I can't wait to see this defense play. It looks solid top to bottom. This could be on the 2001 Ravens level given this conference. Pure domination. No one scores over 10 points a game!!

Oh god...here comes our typical hyberbolic mid-summer assessment. Our defense lost it's entire all-snap LB corps (Wright and Young), that's hard to make up in one season. I'd be fine with our defense performing at the same level it did every game but ECU last year, and I think they can do that.

We lost two stud DL in Broughton and Copeland after the 2018 season and the defense still played pretty well last season. If the LB unit proves to be a weak link then you could play a 4-2-5 scheme or some variation where one of your OLB positions is either a DE/hybrid or a DB/hybrid to take advantage of the talent and depth we have on the front and back ends of our defense. Surely we have two dudes on the roster that can play LB at this level near average in ability...

2 Wilson Huber LB 6-5 240 Jr. 2L Indianapolis, Ind. / Franklin Central
8 Jarell White LB 5-10 212 Sr. 3L Cincinnati, Ohio / La Salle
13 Ty Van Fossen LB 6-2 220 So. 1L Croton, Ohio / St. Francis De Sales
17 Dorian Holloway LB 6-3 228 Fr. RS Columbus, Ohio / Marion-Franklin
27 Darrian Beavers LB 6-3 242 Sr. 1L Cincinnati, Ohio / Colerain UConn
30 Brody Ingle LB 6-0 222 So. 1L Cincinnati, Ohio / La Salle
35 Ryan Royer LB 5-11 218 Jr. 2L Hilliard, Ohio / Davidson
40 DeMarco Baker LB 6-3 230 So. 1L Cincinnati, Ohio / Woodward
41 Joel Dublanko LB 6-3 235 Sr. 3L Aberdeen, Wash. / IMG Academy
44 Mick Oakes LB 6-4 235 So. 1L Cincinnati, Ohio / Indian Hill
46 Grant Horvath LB 6-0 220 Fr. RS Columbus, Ohio / Bishop Watterson
50 Jackson Bruscianelli LB 5-11 223 Fr. RS Woodridge, Ill. / Montini Catholic
Daved Jones Jr. LB 6-1 210 Fr. HS Cincinnati, Ohio / Lakota West
Deshawn Pace LB 6-2 215 Fr. HS Cincinnati, Ohio / Colerain
Jaheim Thomas LB 6-4 225 Fr. HS Cincinnati, Ohio / Princeton

Yea we lost Wright and Young but we're also gaining an All-Conference safety who likely would have left early for the draft had he been healthy (and could have been picked in the first 3 rounds). It'll be hard to play better than last year's defense but I think this squad could do it. Don't discount the coaching on that side of the ball either.

Not sure who the source is but this is fun to think about:

Bearcat Banter game threads ... the in-game advice alone is worth at least 2 wins.

Which of our young tight ends will step up to fill some big shoes. We've always heard great things about Leonard Taylor and Josh Whyle, but haven't really seen much so far. I guess we should also consider Bruno Labelle. Who will become the #1 TE this year.

Van Fossen got a decent amount of snaps at LB last year, right?

I saw this over on the conference board. Part of me says "meh" but another part of me says when the fug are we going to get some preseason love? Tired of UCF always getting the benefit of the doubt for damn sure...
