Wright State drops from 14 sports to 11
Wright State cutting m/w tennis and softball. They were already at the Division I minimum 14 sports (6 men, 8 women) and are now down to 5 and 6. Yikes. They're asking the NCAA for a waiver, but that's a much bigger ask than what Central Michigan is looking for.

EDIT: this move also drops the Horizon League to only 5 teams in men's tennis, below the AQ threshold in 2 years. Nice conference citizenry.

Wow - I can't see the NCAA approving that - if they do, that will open the floodgates

Waivers cover a year or two

You dont drop a sport for a year or two.

Unless they can present a plan to get back into compliance with new sports that just need time to launch, I would think their would be difficulty approving such an ask.

It’s that drain of an FBS program they have... err... wait.

WSU (Meaning that whole university not the AD) has serious money issues. They just escaped being put on fiscal watch. They are so deep in debt reports are it would take them 20 years of solid money management to recover. Their enrollment has continually shrunk over the past decade, despite being one of the most affordable public schools in the state.

Wright State joined D-1 in 1988, when they had 17,000 students. They never really got much bigger than that. They started declining in the mid 2010s.

Last year, they dropped to 12,400 students. And they pitched that as a success.

It would be better for everyone if they downsize the whole university and drop to D-2. The sooner the better for the long-term prospects of staying open at all.

They’re still a prospect for FBS though. They just need a big donor and the will. DavidSt and NoDak know they have hidden money to join the GNC soon.

GLVC would seem to be the best geographic fit within Division II, but I imagine their fans/donors would scream bloody murder if they went down a level.

Could the NCAA put them on ineligible for post season for two years before forcing a move to Division II ? This would give them time to fix their situation while still remaining DI.

Then those donors (all three of them?) need to raise money to save the sports, like Bowling Green and Huntsville did

One of the GLVC required sports is . . . Softball.

RE: Wright State drops from 14 sports to 11
Wright State had already cut men's and women's swimming and diving in 2017 because of the financial trouble despite still having an on-campus pool that's competition size. Apparently, they had kept budgeting as if they had 20,000 combined undergraduate and graduate students, which they hadn't had since the 2012-13 school year, and had bought a whole bunch of real estate across the street from campus for really inflated prices in 2013 and 2014. Many of the buildings they bought had been office buildings for the companies the members of the board of trustees ran which were going under. They also failed to fill out the appropriate paperwork to get funding as an R2 research university in 2015 and were instead funded as an R3. There were a few other fiscal mistakes which led to the university almost being taken over entirely by the state in 2016, but those were the main ones.

I think Wright State is the first D1 softball program to be cut in 2020. If there is a reduced football season or no season at all, it won't be the last. Sooner or later, women's sports besides tennis and golf will be affected should this continue.

You wonder if something like COVID naturally challenges the NCAA rules on participation and conference requirements. Title IX is enough of a driver; NCAA should cease on any needless gatekeeping.
