Oh man, rest in peace Brad. Brad (and Kevin Anderson) got me to JMU and I had the good fortune to play with his son. Thoughts and prayers to his family.

Very sad news. A good man, and a JMU legend. We need his spirit to return to the baseball program. RIP Brad.

Amazing accomplishments. The World Series especially, obviously. But he had some good teams before then as well. Billy Sample, Jim Barbe, Lorenzo Bundy. And a good group of local high school players.
There were some cold spring days there at Long Field with the wind coming down the hill from 81.
Good baseball. Uncle Ron loved baseball. RIP coach Babcock.

RE: RIP Brad Babcock
Whit played for his father at JMU.

I transferred into JMU in the fall of ‘82 from VT. That fall JMU recorded its first FBS win over UVA. Men’s basketball went to the NCAA tournament as a #9 seed and won a first round game. It was the second year in a row they did this. They would do so again the following year.

In the spring of ‘83, Mr. Babcock led the Dukes to the College World Series where they lost a close one to Stanford and got rocked by Texas. JMU was the first Virginia school to ever play in the CWS and the only one until UVA did so in 2009.

You now know why I became a diehard JMU sports fan. ‘82-‘83 is up there with most successful years for JMU athletics. I thought the program was on its way to big things.

We now have lost Carrier, Ehlers, McMillen and Babcock within a short period of time. All left a big impression on me and all are responsible for the success of JMU athletics over the years and even today. Makes me sad to think about these losses.

Was my freshman year in 82-83. I got spoiled thinking it'd always be like that. And I agree, it is sad so many of those titans have left us recently. That run to the College World Series was special. RIP Brad Babcock

Btw, is there anything named after him at the baseball complex?
