If the AAC were to lose those four schools, one option might be to merge with the MWC.
AAC/MWC merger (3 divisions):
Coast to Coast Conference (CCC)
East/Central: Temple, USF, SMU, Tulane, Tulsa, ECU, & Navy (FB) / Wichita (BB)
Mountain: Colorado St., Air Force, Utah State, UNLV, New Mexico, Wyoming
Pacific: Boise St., SDSU, Fresno State, San Jose State, Nevada,
Hawaii (FB) / Gonzaga (BB)
Strong FB schools: Navy, SDSU, Boise St., Hawaii, Air Force, & SMU
Strong BB schools: Gonzaga, Wichita St., SDSU, Utah St., & Temple
.
Provisos:
1) Each team would play 3 cross-division FB games. With 6 Mountain teams, 9 cross-division games would be vs. East/Central teams, and 9 vs. Pacific teams. The East/Central and Pacific teams would each have only 1.5 games per season with teams from the opposite coast, and half of these (i.e., only 0.75 games per season, on average) would involve flying to the opposite coast.
2) Each team would play 10 conference games within their divisions and only 6 cross-divisional games. The East/Central and Pacific teams would each have only 3 games per season with teams from the opposite coast, and half of these (i.e., only 1.5 games per season, on average) would involve flying to the opposite coast.
3) All other sports would shift to a regional model, which Commissioner Aresco has sketched out, which would be scheduled independently by each school, with a post-season conference tournament.
4) There would be the option to cut travel costs in basketball further by playing many of the 18 bicoastal (East/Central vs. Pacific) games in quadruple-header-format tournament settings, located in Dallas, New Orleans, Wichita, or Denver.
