Nearly 20 years ago, plans were approved for a magnetic levitation, or maglev, train that would whisk students across the campus of Virginia's Old Dominion University riding on a thin cushion of air.

By 2002, an elevated concrete and steel guideway was constructed across the Norfolk, Va., school. The state kicked in nearly half of the project's $16 million price tag. A blue-and-white train car was set upon the track, and tests were run.

But the maglev proved to be more complicated than originally thought.

The car never traveled more than a short distance, at speeds far less than the promised 40 miles per hour. More test runs took place over the next few years -- some of them paid for by selling most of the metal track as scrap.

The last of the three stations was demolished in 2010. But a 3,200-foot overhead concrete guideway remains. Today, students at Old Dominion use it as a landmark and to provide a small amount of protection from sun and rain.

Does anybody have any information about the sports affected other than men's basketball, baseball, and softball? The task force report said all sports would be affected.

I’m guessing they have varying scenarios for each that will be decided closer to time of the various seasons. Beyond just cost saving measures there’s the virus itself they’re probably discussing which is a major wildcard. Even best case scenarios we’re looking at limited capacity stadiums and arenas so the cost savings need to be addressed. But not much point in nailing down tennis and golf schedules at this point if you don’t know if they’ll be played or what the impact of fall sports looks like.

They did say men’s soccer would not hold a tournament as we’re typically a multi bid league but women would. Other than that, no.

Edit: Hey my 10k post. I stand by each one. COGS

clt says all indoor events could be held at the odu tennis facility with plenty of room for social distancing.

I think reducing to 8 makes sense maybe even 4. Get below the top 8 teams and you're likely talking about sub .500 teams. Why drag out the tournament and make teams pay travel costs that usually never advance beyond the first game.

Speaking of posting milestones ... before this post #81 (pasted below), when was the last time "ghostofclt" did not start his posted text with "clt says"?

In other words, how long was his "clt says" streak, which was broken on June 10?

(FTR, I see that he started another streak with post #84 (or maybe with some other post in another thread).)
