JMU Campus
Herd fan coming in peace. I’m doing some survey work on your campus today and wanted to drop by and say I like the campus. Construction area is a bit of a drag though. That poor semi driver is trying her best.

RE: JMU Campus
I remember hearing some squawking when I was a student about "this money should go towards education rather than flowers". And, I mean, sure, you want to spend prudently. But it's a really gorgeous campus, and having been to a bunch, most of them really can't compare. I kinda wish the eastern campus flowed better and was a better match for the old part, but the physical bounds are pretty firm.

Aside from looking pretty, there are so many benefits.
I think it helps a lot when it comes to mental health. A place that looks nice will not only make people feel better, but also produce better results.
Also helps a ton in recruiting (all prospective students).
In regards to funding, even the ugliest campuses have grounds crews. Grass needs to be cut. Trees need trimming. Bushes need pruning. Fountains need to be cleaned.
And that's not even covering trash receptacles.
There are so many people who work behind the scenes that aren't educators. They get paid too.

Pretty nice of you to make the effort to say. Thanks
I don’t think any Utah campuses compare. U of U, Utah State (not bad but not the same), Weber State. Haven’t seen as much of BYU, but still doesn’t seem our level. JMU is gorgeous.

BYU's campus is very nice, as is the backdrop. The thing that sticks out most however is how clean and well kept Provo is. There isnt a blade of grass out of place.

Agreed. The nature of my work with certain clients lets me visit several college campuses with new construction. I’ve worked on Notre Dame, Penn State, Pitt, Maryland, a few of Penn Sts satellite campuses, Toledo, Ohio ST, Bowling Greene, Ohio U.
For VA specifically been to a-lot of the small ones. Brief work at Va Tech, JMU, Liberty, Mary Baldwin, Southern VA, Washington and Lee, and Mary Washington.
I just don’t get a connection with a more urban campus. I wish Marshall had a better view of the mountains. But then again that side of the state looks more like Ohio than WV. I grew up near the Va border so I’m a little biased for a good mountain backdrop.

I mean, Weber and USU have the same kind of backdrop, that’s just being in Utah, but that’s not that same as the campus itself.

Completely agree. The only significant school here that is in that college town situation, like you see more back in VA, is Utah State. Which is part of the reason it’s my favorite school out here. The UofU gets a lot of attention because it’s in Salt Lake but it also feels more like an institution and less of a place you can love, for lack of a better word. Makes me appreciate small town universities more.

so you are unbiased when it comes to JMU and have seen quite a bit - excluding backdrop - where does the jmu campus rank compared to what you have seen?

RE: JMU Campus
For anyone who doesn’t know Donna Harper, she is a devoted long time JMU employee and all around wonderful person. She has held several roles at JMU and loves the school. Working at JMU wasn’t a job for Donna. It was her passion.
I am so happy to see her be recognized by the BOV for all she has given to JMU!
