Exclamation Throwback Thursday: Miami/Ohio State BCS Championship
Tonight's game on ESPN is the 2003 Fiesta Bowl BCS National Championship between the Miami Hurricanes and the Ohio State Buckeyes - the infamous 4th and goal pass interference game.

What do you guys think: was it a good or bad call?

Based on the fact that I was rooting for the Canes, it was a horrendous call.

If you watch the game tonight, please do me one favor. At the 2:20 mark in the 4th quarter of the game with Miami out of timeouts, observe the play closely and ask yourself if you still feel the same about this game. The game was over in regulation at this exact point if the call was right. Not sure how much instant replay they'll show tonight, but the play is very important.

I too hate the way the game ended, too much debate but life goes on.

I only have highlights, which shows a run that ends right at the necessary line... then they cut to the ensuing punt at 2:17 without showing the measurement.

This is the one video I found but there are plenty.

Ignore the buckeyesfansonly.com part, lol! They are idiots!

It's a clear catch for 1st down, no question with the ref standing right there. Maybe all the refs had seeing problems in this game?

Every game has some bad calls; this game appears to have had more than it's fair share of them. Who is to say which team would've won a perfectly officiated game?

I could not agree more, Hokie Mark! It's the only reason I brought this play into the conversation. Just like Ohio State/Clemson recently. I stay away from team specific sites because I hate one-sided views. Yes there was a bad call but that doesn't take away the fact that Clemson won the game when they needed to. Their QB stepped up like the baller he is and carried his team. Ohio State had their chance at the end and didn't execute, plain and simple my friend. Great game, just like Ohio State/Miami with great players on both sides.

These replays are great to get us through this virus, but damn, I need some real sports and real soon!

There was plenty of you there. It would have made you proud!

Speaking of, I saw a tweet a little while ago. It said something like "oh no, it's the Ohio State/Miami game. Time for all 3,500 Miami fans to be pissed". Have to throw a friendly jab at Miami during this game.

Ohio State's win ended a seven year stretch in which no school repeated as AP national champions. Instead, the streak was extended to 9 years with Southern Cal's win the following year.

It also meant that the B1G could claim two national championships in the BCS/CFP era instead of only one.

RE: Throwback Thursday: Miami/Ohio State BCS Championship
Here is the way I have always looked at that game.

Miami definitely got hosed at the end — there’s no question about it. Let’s get that out-of-the-way right from the jump. The officials made a very marginal defensive pass interference call a solid five seconds after the play ended!

When have you ever seen that? Now, you’re going to do it with the national championship on the line? I’m sorry but no, that’s completely unacceptable.

Where I’m from, it as well known that Youngstown, Ohio was always a mafia hub. Immediately after the flag was thrown, one of my friends yelled, “Youngstown mafia!” Everyone started laughing and high-fiving because we knew that what we had all just watched was very possibly very crooked.

The U was definitely jobbed, there’s no doubt about that. I’m not a fan of either team, but I’ve never seen anything quite like that before or since — and neither have any of you because what happened was unprecedented in the modern era.

That’s why ESPN is still showing that game all these years later, right?

However, Miami also turned over the football like five or six times that night and when you play that sloppily and that poorly for most of the game, you don’t really deserve to win. I know the Miami fans probably don’t want to hear that but it’s true. You can’t play that poorly in that big of a game and whine about an official’s call.

That Miami team was ridiculously talented and they should have won that game going away. That Ohio State team had talent as well and they were so much better coached.

It’s really weird and it speaks to Miami’s greatness, but they have really lost two national championship games that they had no business whatsoever losing.

Ohio State in 2003 and Penn State in 1987 were both games in which Miami was head and shoulders better than their opponents. Honestly, in both cases, it was no contest. The Penn State game was particularly ridiculous because that wasn’t even a great Penn State team.

However, you still have to protect the ball to win and in both cases the U turned over the football approximately 173 times. When you do that, you don’t deserve to win no matter what happens.

If I were a Miami fan, I would be much more upset over the Cleveland Gary game against Notre Dame in 1988. That was highway robbery! I’ve been around a long time and seen a lot of great college football games and that’s right near the top as being one of the very best football games I’ve ever watched. Both teams played spectacularly and Miami deserved better than when it got that day.

Hey Lets all forget the catch for a first down that they ruled incomplete which allowed the game to go into overtime in the first place!

The one specifically mentioned earlier in this thread.

Nothing like still being wrong 18 years later

I always fall back to what I was taught as a player and what I taught as a coach: If a ref's decision decides the game you only have yourself to blame for allowing them to be in a position to have that much influence on the game. Miami committed a ton of errors in that game to allow the way the game played out, just like Ohio State didn't finish drives in their game with us they like to cry about. Show me a game where you think refs decided the outcome and I'll show you an instance in said game where if the losing team executes the ref isn't in that position later in the game.

If you rank teams that won championships top to bottom, this team has to be dead last.

This team barely beat a Rick Minter UC team. Needed a last second hail Mary miracle to beat... Purdue.

Won half their games by a TD or less.

Lost the BCS game. Ref throws flag 10 minutes after the game ended to save them.

Of course they end of "winning" that one too.
