Bowlsby: Big 12 needs to be "up and running" by mid-July to start season on time
https://www.espn.com/college-football/st...ason-start
Quote:The Big 12 conference doesn't have a date yet for its sports to resume, but commissioner Bob Bowlsby said Tuesday the league needs to be "up and running" by mid-July if the college football season is going to start on time.

"If we're not, we're looking at probably having to delay the season a little bit," he told ESPN, "but it's too early to know if we're going to be able to make that or not."
Quote:Bowlsby said the Big 12 conference will have meetings next week for similar conversations, as their deadline is also May 31. He said it's up to health experts to determine when it's safe for the student-athletes to return.

"They have to have testing and assurances that systems are in place to deal with positive tests, treat people after a positive test, triage, hospital-level disinfectant in all of the activity spaces," he said. "There's just a lot of layers of systems that have to be put in place."

Well Texas is already having staff in the building this week and are eyeing June for players to return. Feels like the 6 week thing is true. Hopefully if everything is fine by mid June, NCAA/Conferences can go ahead and improve light practices since the spring practices were cancelled.

I would be surprised if the NCAA approves practice days in addition to what is normally allowed for "fall" (actually summer) practice time, but who knows.

NCAA "leadership" seems to be hiding under the table, in general, and not wanting to get involved in whether college teams start competing as scheduled, or whether they all start at a later date, or whether some start and some don't. My guess is that almost every team will start fall football practice by mid-July, barring a huge spike in COVID cases. I don't expect Emmert & Co. to do squat.

Texas and Oklahoma are spiking off the rails, and Alabama, Georgia and Florida are covering up the death details and the rising cases for political reasons.

There is a fact of life in Division I athletics that cannot be ignored. Football is responsible for 85% of an athletic department's revenue—if not more.

Translation: If football can't be played, schools most likely will have to cancel all sports.

And don't get caught up on the idea that they could play football in the spring. It would be ill-advised to think schools could play in March, April and May, and expect players to be back in camp the following August for the start of another season.

Translation: There will be sports in the fall! Thank God for Football!

So hopefully they aren't up and running by mid-July. It's a joke of an article anyway; as if these schools wouldn't put athletics over academics at every opportunity. They've been doing it for 100 years already.
