I commented on his original post.. which I think, in general, is idiotic. They’re entering the portal because of the uncertainty.. Not because they know it’s being cut. Big difference.
Any logical student athlete who wants to continue on in athletics would be doing the same if there was a rumored closure or cut at any institution.

Fired local celebrity Chris Zorich for a guy who doesn’t even know the requirements for Division 1 membership.

While I would love the baseball program to stick around, if it’s not financially viable then I will accept that. Especially if it means saving the rest of the department at this time. I personally believe this administration is much better suited to get Chicago State in a financially responsible and competitive position than Zorich. Zorich may have been a local celebrity and administration experience at a lower tier institution, but his experience is no comparison to Charles’ experience at the D1 level. Plus, Charles has hired some quality senior administrators — so I’m still very optimistic for the future.

It had been mentioned about other team sports in this thread and the other and I’m sure the department has thought about this. So I’m not going to jump on that bandwagon in bashing them. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to hear any sort of presentation in the last meeting on the subject to see what’s all being discussed. For all we know, the department had a presentation to go over.. only to be ruined by immaturity. But on the note of other team sports:

Football- not realistic.

Wrestling, lacrosse, hockey, water polo, men’s volleyball— don’t really see any of those happening.

Men’s soccer— Hasn’t been recently mentioned in the budget requests but it was an initial requirement for their WAC membership.. And has been budgeted in the past so who knows.

From looking at their EADA (https://www.gocsucougars.com/services/do...9_1_.pdf), baseball had expenses of 605k with revenue of 312k. 28 players reported. Women’s soccer had expenses of $453k and revenue of $381k. 24 players.

So there very well could be a business move in play if soccer is more sustainable. They’ve made budget requests for a soccer field On campus and track renovations.

I trust that whatever decision is ultimately made has been well thought out and is in the best interest of the school and athletic department. I’m hopeful there’s something that can be done to keep the program.. but at this point even if they did they’d have next to no roster. It may be best to suspend the program for now in hopes it can be returned down the road. Other schools have honored scholarships for those who want to stay.. I’d imagine CSU is doing the same. Once again— we weren’t able to hear any details. We will just have to see what goes on.

D2 might be the best place for them to regrew with students and the budget. We have many schools downgraded levels to rebuild just to rejoin. Abilene Christian and Houston Baptist are two that have done that.

The decision to drop baseball was not well thought out. It has blown up on them. Every player on the baseball team is in the transfer portal. Chicago State cannot stay at the NCAA level without baseball. They would need to add another men's team sport which would negate in savings from cutting baseball.

1. Division I Schools must field teams in at least seven sports for men and seven for women or six for men and eight for women, with at least two team sports for each gender.
2. Division II Schools have to sponsor at least five sports for men and five for women (or four for men and six for women), with two team sports for each gender, and each playing season represented by each gender.
3. Division III Schools must sponsor at least five sports for men and five for women, with two team sports for each gender, and each playing season represented by each gender.

Without baseball, the options for Chicago State are NAIA or drop athletics all together. What was the point of hiring Elliot Charles as the new AD if you are going to drop baseball? Charles was making $134,000 as an Associate Athletic Director at Clemson. At Chicago State, he is probably not making much more than that. The reason he takes the job is that it is a D1 school, a D1 opportunity.

The school leadership needs to decide what their vision of the athletic program at Chicago State is? Are they a D1 program? Chicago State has a 7,000 seat arena basketball arena built in 2007 and paid for by the taxpayers of the State of Illinois. That cost $38 million. That was not built for an NAIA school. The baseball stadium was build in 2013 and cost $2.5 million.

“The new baseball stadium is a clear sign of Chicago State University's renewed commitment to Division I athletics,” Chicago State University President Dr. Wayne D. Watson said. “The complex will benefit the entire student body and the surrounding communities.”

“This will be the finest collegiate baseball facility in Chicago,” Chicago State University Athletic Director Dan Schumacher said. “The new stadium will be a game changer for the baseball program in terms of recruiting, visibility and available resources. It is also another indication of Chicago State's commitment to leveling the playing field among local Division I universities.”

You could see the commitment to D1 athletics back then. It is not seen today. I think Chicago State leadership should let everyone know where they stand on D1 athletics. The pandemic has made it hard on every school, but they are going to have to find the money somewhere else if they want to stay at D1.

RE: Chicago St to discuss athletics today in Board of Trustees Meeting - 18 May 2020
This is why I mentioned they very well could have a plan in place.. conveniently going through each men’s team sport option and the reported cost as mentioned in the 2019 EADA. A plan we didn’t get to hear. I’m not here to trash a department that has to look at all of their student athletes as a whole rather than just 28 of them. My knee jerk reaction was frustration.. but after having time to let it all sink in I can understand why it may need to be done. They were left with a crappy situation ever since Schumacher left to be frank. Dr. Hendricks barely said a word nor were any improvements done in her time. Dildy was in a no-win situation. Zorich didn’t really make any significant administration hires in his time. However, Charles has made SEVERAL hires to benefit the department for the future. To me— he’s more committed to having a D1 program than anyone else we’ve had in the last 5-6 years. I’m sure the athletic department is well aware of the requirements. But sometimes you have to make an unpopular and tough decision in order to provide a stable future. So before we jump to conclusions, which is so easy to do these days, let’s give this group the benefit of the doubt. We were prevented from hearing the presentation on athletics thanks to the interruptions in the call. For all we knew, the decision was made when Joslyn was let go. And with all the recent administrative hires, women’s basketball coach, and national search for a VB coach, I trust Charles and his team in making CSU a successful department.

It looks like FAMU is leaving the MEAC at 9 members and just 7 for football. Any chance Chicago St, who fancies themselves as an HBCU, would try to hitch their wagon to the MEAC dumpster fire?

Just needed another warm body to use the carpool lane. It was either Chicago State or this creepy ass doll.

At least Chicago State would be good for conversation. Doll is probably a warmer body though.

Lots of feedback after AD Charles presentation.. including two trustees voting “no.” However, baseball has been officially cut at CSU.
Men’s soccer will reportedly take its place effective immediately.. FY 21 (that’s what was said during the presentation).

I guess soccer is cheaper. You don't have as many lost balls to replace when they get hit out of the park.

Seriously, I hope they had good analysis to substantiate the change in sports.

During the AD’s presentation, he mentioned a feasibility study was used in helping to make this decision, and that it’ll save the university about 500k a year. I wish they’d make the study public.. as it appears even members of the board weren’t privy to a copy of the actual study, itself. An on campus soccer field has been listed in the budget recommendations for the last 3-4 years.. it looks like it’ll finally happen. I just hope they maintain the baseball field because it’s a very nice playing field. Hopefully if this administration can get things turned around it could be brought back in the future.

Well, a full baseball coaching staff probably costs Chicago State's more money (in salaries) than a men's soccer staff. Less equipment cost with soccer. And, with the baseball stadium not in use (sitting dormant) there is also less support (maintenance) staff needed.
